This is a commissioned portrait of Tucker (pencil on sketch pad), a close friend's dog I sketched for him a year ago, a period of time after his dog passed. Portraits are great remembrances of family and pets.

This is what I'm working on now and its nearly completed. Its a color study for a rework of a larger painting I did a couple of years ago. This is Oil on an 8 x 12 Panel. The larger painting is 40 x 60 on linen canvas. I was never satisfied with the color harmony or the values on the larger, one so I've reduced my pallet to a split complement only 5 colors and this is the result thus far. Better to save time and get it right here before jumping into the larger one without a solid plan.

I presented the finished portrait to my father on his visit here last week. He loved it and took it home with him. I cut an old frame down to size to frame it. Vintage father, vintage frame. Fortunately I collect old frames and easels and didn't have time to order a custom frame before his visit. For the artists out there, I used the Anders Zorn Palette, Mars Black, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red and Titanium White, which is all you need for this style of a portrait. Oil on 18 x 24 Panel.

“A few days ago I shared an earlier stage of this portrait of my father. Here’s the latest version after incorporating feedback from my mentor Skip Whitcomb. Still using the Zorn palette — focusing on stronger light direction, warmer/cooler skin tones, and more life in the eyes.
What do you think — any areas I should refine next?

What I'm working on today. This is a 10 x 10 color study for a larger painting which will end up on a 36 x 36 canvas. This is on the beach near Carlsbad California. I liked the afternoon glow and the way it made me feel. Hard to believe it took me a few years to start a painting of it after taking the photo.

I just completed this 18 x 24 Oil on Panel painting "Cold Morning at Blanco Mountain" My reference was a photo I took in early January returning to Texas from Colorado one bright early morning. I saw this stunning view and pulled over the truck and took the photo.

It will be posted for sale on my website later this week at https://www.rbchristianartist.com/works

I will also be posting here and on my website another painting I just completed. This is also a mountina themed painting but the focal point is a mule driven wagon moving across the landscape in classic western style. More on that later this week.

I just completed this Oil on Panel 12 x 9 color study in preparation for a larger painting. Its based on a recent photo I took coming down the mountain from Wolf Creek in Colorado on my way to South Fork. I went through a tunnel and coming out from the other end I was presented with this breathtaking view of a sliver of light on the cliff's edge as the sun was peaking over the mountain and the day was drawing to an end.

This would display well on any wall with yellow or violet hues or near visual elements having those hues.

This original is for sale. See this and more of my paintings at http://rbchristianartist.com

Here is a color study I worked on and just completed as a reference for a larger painting. This is 9 x 12 Oil on masonite board. It is kind of a self portrait. The trail is I'm walking on here is about 10 miles east of North Bend, Washington State, in a park and is very close to the spot where I set up to do some plein air painting last summer.

Does this make you want to go hiking or camping or does it make you want to paint something from nature?
