It’s baby season at Spiegel Grove! Our grounds crew found this fawn this morning here, and we have roped off a large area around it. Please stay out of that area, which is well-marked with caution tape to give the fawn space.

This is a good reminder that wild baby animals often are not abandoned. The mother is often nearby and will be back for them later. Ohio Department of Natural Resources recently posted about this, and this post has great information to help when wondering about fawns: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1DoQeP5y1H/

Today is ! So we’ve decided to share with you two lovely dresses from our collections. These gowns belonged to Martha Baker Hayes, granddaughter-in-law of President Rutherford and First Lady Lucy Hayes.
Martha lived here in the Hayes Home at Spiegel Grove.

The black-sequined evening dress is believed to date from 1930 to 1939. It has a full black taffeta and tulle skirt, and the bodice is tulle with black sequins. A pink and green sequined flower is stitched on the front of the bodice. The skirt falls to the lower calf.

The beige, satin evening gown is a floor-length dress. It has a v-neckline and slightly flared skirt with a short train, as well as a matching fringed sash. This dates from 1920 to 1929.

Why didn’t we take these out of the boxes and open them up? Historic textiles are very fragile, and we decided to leave them in the boxes at this time.

in 1839, Rutherford Hayes’ beloved sister, F***y, wrote this funny letter to her brother. The two were very close and often joked with each other.

“Oh how I do wish you were at home now we have got plenty to read, & plenty to eat, nothing to do, & as happy as clams, but we want you to scold at, you know it wont do very well for me to scold Mother, & if she scolds me why you see I get mad, so we are obliged to let our talents in that line lie dormant most of the time which is a great pity as no doubt with a little cultivation they would be very brilliant.”

F***y and her mother were living in Delaware, Ohio, and Rutherford was attending Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.
