Early Pioneers of Garden City:
James and Maymebelle Stonerock, in white aprons, who hailed from Casey, Illinois, arrived in Garden City sometime in 1922 and occupied an old, deserted little house at Krauter and Central, which at one time had been owned by Will Hauk and used as a corn crib and storage shed. The Stonerocks were among the first people in business in Garden City. Shortly after arriving, they ran a small hamburger stand on Middlebelt, just north of Smith's grocery. (The first store of any consequence was that of James Smith, at the northwest corner of Ford and Middlebelt). Sandwiches were 5 cents, as were hot dogs and sodas. A big sign over the stand read, "MOTHER'S HOMEMADE PIE." Three or four years later, they were running a grocery and a snack bar, where the present dime store stands(William's Dept Store/Minders/Andrews). Their first customers at this eatery were the McFarlane brothers.
