F***y Palmer painted for Currier and Ives in the 1860’s. I like all her views of the Hudson River but particularly this one as you can see our shop on Garrisons Landing, the other side of the river from Flirtation Walk on the West Point campus.

A customer wants to look at our holdings of Chinese pith paintings. Here are two, of many hundreds, that we have. Pith is a translucent, organic medium used instead of paper as the surface to paint on. They were painted by Chinese artists for the Western traders who wanted local keepsakes to take home to their family and friends. I am very partial to them and have a large collection dealing with tea, production, trading and consumption.
I will put some of them up soon.

Just in, a signed copy of Joan Fontcuberta’s classic fabrication of a Soviet cosmonaut. Supposedly lost from Soyuz 2 in 1968 and then erased from Soviet records. The book is published in Russian and Spanish with the English text printed on red paper at the back of the book.

William Baker’s 1814-17 exercise book from when he attended Clinton Academy , East Hampton Long Island. Even though the US had adopted the $ as its currency in 1785, the academy was still teaching in pounds, shillings & pence. Long Island was a big whaling and trading area and its students needed to be able to handle British and Spanish coins. NB foreign coins remained legal currency till 1857.

These cards were hand painted and laid on card in Peking around 1900. There are 24 in all and they come with the original box. They were probably purchased by a tourist as table name tags, with guest names written on the card when used. I think I like it because it has its original box with the seller’s label.

This 1921 Aeromarine, promotional pamphlet is a milestone of US aviation history. It wasn’t until 1925 and the Kelly act that the market was opened up. Also note that it wasn’t until 1926 that the federal authority took over civil aviation and began implementing regulations. It took another 25 years before the FAA was formed…

Here we have a program from the first world ski championships to be held outside Europe. There are two factors adding to its importance. 1 the cover was designed by noted Aspen artist Herbert Bayer and 2. There are numerous event associated pieces of ephemera stapled in. I found out from the text that the Australian ski club was founded in 1861 the same year as the Trysil ski club of Norway. The first ski clubs established .

Did you know Camp Smith was a to***co farm first? I didn’t know this when I purchased this Peekskill cigar box. I have photographed all the wrappers attached but wait till you see what I found inside…. I would guess the box is from the 1800’s and the contents some time soon after.
