Historic Johnson Farm

Historic Johnson Farm A heritage education center, we offer school field trips, group tours, animals, nature trails, picni Sallie Johnson. Mrs.

Beginning with Oliver Moss in 1874, the Johnson Farm has a long history in Henderson County. The original farm house was built between 1876 and 1880 but our period of significance begins in 1913 with Mrs. Sallie Johnson ran the farm as a summer boarding business from 1913-1958, along with her two sons Leander and Vernon. The brothers closed the boarding business when their mother died but they rem

ained active in Henderson County for the rest of their lives. They had a vision that one day their farm would become an educational resource for the school children of Henderson County, teaching them about the farming life that is so integral to the history of this Appalachian region. Today we honor their legacy by acting as a cultural heritage center owned and operated by Henderson County Public Schools. We offer historic home and grounds tours, field trips and heritage festivals throughout the year. We are also home to the Heritage Weavers and Fiber Artists in the old boarding house. Visit our website for more details or stop by for a tour today!

It was a great first day of camp! Campers created clay figures and flower wreaths in art. In the farm station, they did a pollinator scavenger hunt, met the animals, and did a beehive STEM challenge using toothpicks and marshmallows. The guest today was the Weavers & Fiber Artists where campers got to pick from finger knitting, circular weaving, and felting soap.

We can't wait for Day 2!

Escape the daily rush of modern life, step back in time, and surround yourself with nature during one of our guided forest bathing sessions this summer. These immersive sessions invite you to unplug from the modern rush and slow down among our 100-year-old buildings, peaceful pastures, and ancient trees. Unlike a strenuous hike, this 2.5 hour experience allows the quiet rhythm of the farm to gently lower your stress levels and restore your energy.

You will engage your senses in a series of guided invitations designed to connect you deeply with the setting around you. Each session concludes with a tea ceremony using herbs grown on the farm and light snack leaving you feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Our sessions will be led by certified Forest Therapy Guide, Lisa Wilson. Lisa trained with the Shinrin Yoku Association in Nara, Japan before coming here. Visit her website at EarthforaPillow.org for more information about the growing list of health benefits this practice offers. Each session is unique and offers different ways to enrich your connection to nature and the farm. Each session has limited spots available.

Sessions are $50 each:
June 27
July 18
August 29
You may consider our package rate ($125) if you sign up for all three summer sessions. Once the form is received, you will receive an emailed invoice from Square to pay online. Payment is due a week before the session.

These sessions are offered for anyone ages 16 and up. If you have younger people interested, please reach out to us to schedule something for them.

We look forward to seeing you!

As part of the farm's Mobile Design Studio project sponsored by a Meta Community Grant, students in Ms. Staton's and Ms. Freeman's classes at Bruce Drysdale Elementary created a field guide to Henderson County. Students worked in groups researching a place or topic of local interest before designing a page for the guide. These guides will be available at the farm and hopefully at the Henderson County Visitor's Center for children visiting the area.

These pictures are from a few weeks ago so the garden already looks very different, but the West Henderson High School agriculture classes have been hard at work getting the vegetable garden ready for the year!

As part of the farm's Mobile Design Studio grant through Meta, 4th graders in Mrs. Maynard's class at Atkinson Elementary spent the winter and early spring learning about pollinators, native plants, and gardening. They designed their own pollinator garden for the school and last week finally got to plant! Thanks to Leigh with the Cooperative Extension and our partners at RootEd for help on the project.

Last Friday, volunteers through the United Way of Henderson County Day of Caring helped paint the chicken house, three-sided shed, outhouse, and outdoor classroom at the farm. These buildings had been looking rough after the major paint project last year, so now they are up to par with the others!
