More than 80 years ago, the signing of this document marked the end of World War II and the beginning of a long journey toward peace.

Signed aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, the original Japanese Instrument of Surrender was recently on display at the Diplomatic Archives of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs 外務省 .

This historic artifact was featured in the first part of the special exhibition, “Showa Diplomacy: Records of a Turbulent Era,” commemorating the Japanese government's “100 Years of Shōwa” initiative.

More than eight decades later, this document remains a powerful reminder of the significance of that day and the enduring importance of peace.

USS Missouri cuts through the water during her 1986 around-the-world shakedown cruise, a journey that took the newly recommissioned battleship across the globe.

Not a bad way to see the world. 👀

Before the Mighty Mo returned to active service in 1986, Russell Hall was already aboard helping prepare her for what came next. ⚓

Mr. Hall served aboard USS Missouri from 1985–1987 as an EM2 in E-Division and is a recommissioning plankowner.

He visited the ship in September with his wife Nancy and shared memories from his time aboard — including sleeping in the ship’s 1940s-style racks as a member of the pre-commissioning crew, before newer racks were installed.

Mr. Hall stood watch in the Lighting and Tool Issue Shops and at the Engine Room switchboards. He also served as the electrician assigned to the ship’s “Flying Squad” damage control team.

Decades later, it was a pleasure to have him walking the decks of the Mighty Mo once again.

Thank you for your service, Mr. Hall! ⚓

🌎 In 1986, USS Missouri set out on an around-the-world shakedown cruise following her recommissioning and return to active service.

The voyage took her across oceans and to ports around the globe as her crew continued training and testing the newly modernized ship. Along the way, the Mighty Mo became quite the world traveler.

Here are just a few stops from her journey in November 1986:

1️⃣ Lisbon, Portugal
2️⃣ Gulf of Naples, Italy
3️⃣ Istanbul, Turkey

Welcome back aboard, Dwayne Bailey! ⚓

Mr. Bailey served aboard USS Missouri from 1990–1991 as a YN3 assigned to X-1 Division. Much of his time aboard was spent handling administrative duties in an office space that is still in use today.

During his recent visit, Mr. Bailey found his former berthing space and enjoyed looking through the crew roster in our Pathway to Peace exhibit. He also shared fond memories of everyday life aboard the Mighty Mo, from the chow to the ship’s barbershop.

It was a pleasure walking the ship with Mr. Bailey and hearing the stories and memories that brought these spaces back to life.

Thank you for your service, Mr. Bailey, and welcome back to the Mighty Mo!
