Opening Tomorrow in Santa Fe | Shane Tolbert in “Driveway Show”

We are pleased to share that Shane Tolbert is included in the group exhibition “Driveway Show,” a one-night-only show in Santa Fe, NM.

The paintings on view are recent works from the artist’s June residency, through Alfred University’s Drawing & Painting program in Düsseldorf, Germany. In this new body of work, Tolbert has pared his canvases down to their essentials, resulting in bands of meandering, multicolored lines, drawn from small daily studies. Other paintings integrate that line into interlocking, energetic forms, a motif that has long been part of Tolbert’s practice.

From the Archive | Julian Schnabel

In 2005, McClain Gallery presented “Julian Schnabel: Amor Misericordioso,” the artist’s first Texas exhibition since his 1988 retrospective at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The exhibition marked something of a homecoming for Schnabel who spent formative years in Houston as a student at the University of Houston.

The show introduced a new body of large-scale paintings on canvas in which an appropriated photographic image became an emotionally laden ground for Schnabel’s gestural painting. Operatic in scale and emotion, the works continued his career-long exploration of the enduring questions of humanity, beauty, and loss.

We’re pleased to currently have one of the monumental paintings from the 2005 exhibition, “Untitled (Amor Misericordioso IV)”, installed in our viewing room.

From the Archive | Bernar Venet

In January 2010, the Texan-French Alliance for the Arts (TFAA) unveiled a nine-month exhibition of sculptures by internationally renowned French artist Bernar Venet. With this exhibition, Houston joined more than 20 cities worldwide—among them Paris, Brussels, Hong Kong, São Paulo, New York, and Chicago—to host a Bernar Venet exhibition.

In collaboration with the artist and McClain Gallery, fifteen monumental sculptures were placed across eight locations throughout scenic Hermann Park. Made of Cor-Ten steel, the works stood up to 30 feet tall and weighed as much as 12 tons each.

Venet, whose long and distinguished career dates back to the 1960s, first began producing monumental linear improvisations in steel in the early 1980s. Venet’s sculptures explore variations of lines, particularly of arcs and curves. It’s the scope of the work in its mass, concept and ex*****on that makes Venet one of the most prominent living sculptors today.

From the Archive | Louise Nevelson

While we’re closed for our summer break, we’re looking back at a selection of past exhibitions that have shaped the gallery’s program.

In 2007, McClain Gallery presented “Louise Nevelson: Sculpture And Collage” in close collaboration with the Louise Nevelson Foundation. The exhibition brought together a survey of the artist’s multidisciplinary practice, featuring works created between 1957 and 1979, including wooden box landscapes, wall reliefs, steel sculpture, and framed collage drawings.

Celebrated in her lifetime as a defining figure in American sculpture, Nevelson is best known for assembling found wooden objects into monumental landscape constructions, which she often unified beneath a single coat of black paint. Also in 2007, a major traveling retrospective of her work opened at the Jewish Museum in New York, before continuing to the de Young at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Dorothy Hood in Los Angeles | FERNBERGER

We are pleased to share that “Dorothy Hood: Transportation of the Spheres” is on view at Fernberger Gallery, in Los Angeles, CA.

This exhibition highlights Hood’s collages from the 1980s and 1990s, which draw from modernist collage tradition. Her technique conjures a profound mindscape, one that echoes the Surrealist sensibility she absorbed during her formative years in Mexico, alongside the artist’s fascination for NASA’s spatial exploration of the 1960s and 1970s, which helped unlock the artist’s dreamlike psyche.

“Transportation of the Spheres” gathers a diverse array of collages into a suite that surveys the breadth of Hood’s curiosities and reach of her intellect––drawing together planetary bodies, deities, skulls, and specimens that bridge the natural and supernatural worlds.

“Dorothy Hood: Transportation of the Spheres” is on view at Fernberger gallery until September 12, 2026.

FINAL DAYS | Katsumi Hayakawa: “Constellations of Matter”
On view through July 25, 2026

“Constellations of Matter” features recent large paintings. Hayakawa’s iridescent paint creates broad, enveloping fields that subtly reflect and scatter light across the surface. These meticulously detailed works shift with the viewer’s movement, much like observing constellations in the night sky.

Alongside the paintings are new wall-mounted paper constructions, drawing from the visual language of conduits and urban infrastructure. Repetition and aggregation of the elements translate the work into abstraction: rhythm, color, and pattern.

Katsumi Hayakawa: Constellations of Matter at McClain Gallery

Katsumi Hayakawa’s paintings evoke a sense of space, with broad yet faint horizons and suspended, amorphous shapes that suggest both microscopic and cosmic scales.

His large-scale works emerge from the aggregation of small pieces into a cohesive whole. Hayakawa states “This work is composed of countless small elements that function like signals. Individually, they do not carry a fixed meaning, but through their accumulation and relationships, a larger structure begins to appear.” Viewed up close, Hayakawa’s surfaces resolve into discrete flecks of color. From a distance, his light and dark tones coalesce into a shifting, luminous mosaic, evoking glimpses of a vast cosmos or of organic structures at the cellular level.
