I love finding old photographs of Houston, and Real Photo Postcards (official term, often shortened to RPPCs) offer both an image and some context of the time. This one of the San Jacinto monument mentions its height, possibly to show its a little taller than the Washington Monument. Everything’s bigger in Texas afterall.

Really excited about this news!

The Menil Collection is pleased to share that a new art space will open in late 2027. The former Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum will become a site for semi-permanent, site-specific commissions exploring the themes of spirituality and the human condition.

Internationally renowned Brooklyn-based artist Teresita Fernández has been invited to create a monumental, immersive work to inaugurate the reimagined space, now known as the Fresco Building.

The installation will be a highlight of the Menil's 40th anniversary, which will be celebrated across all five art spaces on the museum's 30-acre campus.

Save the date for next Saturday, June 27 for the opening of Thirty Years: The Legacy of John Cleary. We can’t wait to reminisce with all of you, so bring your stories! I’ll try to find those mini Budweisers John Cleary always had at his openings!

Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of Duane Michals. Here’s a pic of the first time we met (can you tell I was thrilled?!) along with my favorite photograph of his. I cannot state strongly enough how brilliant he was, how hysterical he was, or how loving he was. His devotion to his husband even as Fred was in the throes of dementia was beyond admirable; it made you believe in true love. He was esoteric like no other, and the way he saw the world made the fine art photography world grow by leaps and bounds (his sequencing ALONE). He was the most charming dinner companion, didn’t watch his mouth in the slightest when talking politics, and never ceased to make me laugh (and think). The planet just won’t be the same without him on it. Rest in peace, Duane.

Only two weeks left to see Sander Vos: Interpolation! Drawing inspiration from Cubism, Vos deconstructs portraits and everyday objects, reconfiguring them through layering and spatial manipulation. Shadows, fragments, and negative space guide the eye, showing that the photographic frame is shaped as much by perception as by the camera. In these works, the ordinary becomes strange yet recognizable, evoking reflection on how perception shapes our experience of reality.
