During the 200th anniversary year of Frederic Church’s birth, the Albany Institute of History & Art is celebrating his legacy with an exhibition opening June 6.

The new exhibition, “Your Friend, Frederic E. Church,” focuses on the friendship between Church and Albany-based sculptor, Erastus Dow Palmer. Letters between the two friends will be included alongside sculpture, drawings, paintings and manuscripts.

Can you spot the Erastus Dow Palmer work in OLANA’s court hall of the main house?

Frederic Church 200, the ongoing bicentennial celebration of Frederic Church's legacy, has brought renewed attention to the artist’s work, and in one case, has led a partner museum to uncover a case of mistaken identity.

When Colby Museum of Art acquired the painting previously titled "Mount Newport on Mount Desert Island" in 2017, visitors and scholars began noting that the central peak didn't match that region's topography. Research linked the terrain to Church's 1852 travels through inland Maine, and the painting's true title was confirmed from a label on its back.

Newly retitled “Campfire in the Maine Wilderness” is now on view as part of the exhibition, “Some American Stories.” Visit the Colby Museum of Art to read the extended label and follow the research trail.

Did you know that when Frederic Church purchased what is now the OLANA property, it included an 18th century farmhouse, the foundation of which is visible today? The farmhouse was used to accommodate farm managers and guests, and Church would eventually add rooms to the structure in 1869. The farmhouse was standing into the 1950s and 1960s. The later excavation of the foundation was the first project The Olana Partnership worked on with the landscape.

“Although Olana has long been known for the eclectic home that Church built here, The Olana Partnership has been working steadily to restore the grounds, which many consider to be Church’s last and most expansive work of art.”

Frederic Church saw great promise in the young artist John S. Jameson, becoming a friend and supporter of the gifted painter and musician. While visiting Church’s Tenth Street Studio, Jameson discussed whether his future lay in music or painting.

After Jameson’s death in 1864 at just twenty-two years old as a prisoner of war at Andersonville Prison, Church remembered him as a “pure, high-minded and talented youth.” Olana State Historic Site preserves Jameson’s "Landscape with River and Barn," a gift from Jameson’s mother to Frederic Church after her son’s passing.

Today we remember those who served and are no longer with us. To honor active-duty military and veterans, The Olana Partnership offers a $25 membership and discounted tour tickets. Happy Memorial Day!

Following in the footsteps of his mentor Thomas Cole, who made spending summers in Maine a tradition, Frederic Church headed north to Vermont again and again, painting the landscape firsthand.

This Saturday, May 23, “Frederic Church in Vermont” opens at the Middlebury College Museum of Art, bringing together for the first time more than forty drawings, oil sketches, and finished paintings born from Church’s three decades of visits.
