Frederic Church's Olana The Olana Partnership is the non-profit cooperative partner of NYS Parks at Olana State Historic Site The landscape is open every day from 8:30AM to dusk.

Historic landscape and house tours are available Friday through Sunday 11 AM - 3:30 PM. The Museum Store is open Friday through Sunday from 10:00AM to 4PM.

On this day in 1884 Frederic Church wrote to his friend and fellow artist, Erastus Dow Palmer, declaring his preference for being in the landscape in order to find and create views, vs. sitting in the studio with canvas:

“I have made about 1 3/4 miles of road this season, opening entirely new and beautiful views—can make more and better landscapes in this way then by tampering with canvas and paint in the studio.”

"Ridge Road" (1/2 mile) and “Lake Road” (1/2 mile), both built in 1884, constitute much of this road construction.

For the first time in two centuries a landmark effort to return 30,000 acres of ancestral land in Maine to Indigenous stewardship has begun.

The land will be transferred to the Penobscot Nation, who have called the region home for at least 10,000 years.

During trips to the region in the 19th Century, Frederic Church painted Mount Katahdin frequently. The mountain is important to Penobscot culture, considered a sacred geological formation.

2026 marks the 60th anniversary of Olana being saved, and today — October 15 — is the 60th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, our nation's primary historic preservation law.

The NHPA created the National Register of Historic Places and called for the creation of State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs) to administer the national program at the state level. This national framework to protect historic sites such as Olana also included the Section 106 review, which has safeguarded Olana and its integral viewshed for decades.

Ever wondered what the NYS Division for Historic Preservation (DHP) does inside the buildings on Peebles Island State Park and how the collections at Olana State Historic Site are cared for? Well, now is your chance to find out!

This coming week, October 15, 16 and 17 — from 9:00AM to 3:00PM each day — the NYS DHP is hosting its first Open House in 15 years.

The event is free and open to the public and will include behind-the-scenes tours, exhibits, demonstrations, and presentations that highlight the work DHP does to promote and protect the history of New York State through state historic sites and in communities across the state.

Today’s was likely completed during a trip Frederic Church took to Maine in or around 1865. The cloud formations are light and dark, large and small, and all criss-crossing through the sky over low mountains and a cottage. The piece highlights Church’s interest in cloud and sunset phenomenon, which he frequently observed and documented through oil and graphite sketches.

🗓️ Coming up on October 14 you can join The Olana Partnership for a webinar conversation with Dr. Shannon Vittoria, Associate Curator of American Art at LACMA, centered around Frederic Church’s trips to Mexico and the legacy of the landscape oil sketch.

Although the last two decades of Church's life are often dismissed as a period of unfulfilled potential marred by the artist's failing health, an examination of his Mexican works reveals Church's resilience, his ongoing engagement with international landscape traditions, and the significance of the landscape oil sketch–one of his greatest legacies.
