For our Quilt of the Month, we are sharing this collaborative work by Mary Johnson and her daughter Mary Linn Sandberg! The design reflects the garden where Sandberg grew up, with vegetable plots, berry bushes, orchards, flower beds, and the birds and insects that inhabited the space. Drawing on historic garden imagery along with inspiration from "The Art of the Kitchen Garden" by Jan Gertley, Sandberg developed the layout, presenting the central vegetable plots to her mother for her 75th birthday. Johnson then appliquéd and embroidered each block, completing the quilt in 1991.

Exhibited and recognized at the 1991 American Quilt Society Show in Paducah, Kentucky, the work exemplifies intergenerational collaboration, meticulous craftsmanship and the translation of personal memory into a richly detailed textile narrative.

This quilt is currently on display at the IQM as part of "Material Nation: 250 Years of American Quilts."

On Sept. 18, join us for our 3rd annual International Textiles Show-and-Tell!

As part of Lincoln Welcoming Week, this event celebrates the textiles and stories of Lincoln’s global community. Enjoy FREE admission, access to all IQM galleries and refreshments.

We’ll also unveil the exhibition “American Creativity Continued: 1870s to 1970s,” curated by students from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and Saitama University in Japan as part of a textile-focused museum exhibition course.

Another is in the books! We met so many wonderful people who stopped by to chat about the quilts we brought to this year’s event.

It was incredible to watch attendees connect with such a vast selection of quilts from around the globe, and to visit with some of the wildly talented quilters who are featured right in our collection! Festival of Quilts is always a wonderful event and we are thrilled to have taken part!

Coming to Textile Talks on Aug. 12: "American Creativity" with IQM Curator of International Collections Dr. Marin Hanson!

Hanson will discuss the 'American Creativity' gallery, now showing at the IQM as part of "Material Nation: 250 Years of American Quilts." This gallery explores the 100-year period between the 1870s and 1970s and the massive changes that occurred in the world of quilts. Technological and commercial advancements wielded by designers, artists, and everyday people resulted in innovative approaches and aesthetics that pushed quilts off the bed and onto the wall.

Textile Talks are always free! These online panel discussions and presentations are held every Wednesday at 2 p.m. EST on Zoom. Textile Talks are brought to you by Studio Art Quilt Associates, Quilt Alliance, Surface Design Association, and the International Quilt Museum.

Our Quilt of the Month for July is special quilt designed by Miriam Schapiro and made by Marilyn Price.

This quilt features solid black fabric with a hand-quilted tumbling block pattern in red thread. The central heart design is made from appliquéd blue, white, and pink tumbling blocks with floral designs appliquéd on top.

Schapiro, cofounder of the CalArts Feminist Art Program and a leading voice in the Pattern and Decoration movement, designed this piece for "The Artist and the Quilt" exhibition — a project celebrating International Women's Year. The traveling show paired well-known visual artists with skilled quilters. Schapiro drew on women's traditional handwork to elevate pattern, appliqué and ornament as serious art forms. This quilt embodies the era's feminist effort to link fine art with women's textile labor.

You can see the quilt in person as part of the "American Creativity" portion of "Material Nation: 250 Years of American Quilts."
