Donations greatly appreciated. For countless generations, Mayfield residents have pointed with pride to the Rice Homestead as one of its local treasures. The Rice Homestead has been lived in and cared for up until the 1990's by the descendants of its original owner, Oliver Rice, a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Built in 1790 (the original log cabin) and 1810 (the pictured home) has merited a Ne

w York State Department of Education official historical marker and is on both the National and State Historical Registries. It is considered a fine, well preserved example of a Federal Era farmhouse. The home is now a museum maintained by the Mayfield Historical Society. It contains a potpourri of historical treasures from the Rice family and the Mayfield area. Open Wednesdays and Saturdays in the summer from noon to 4 pm or call 518-332-0538 to schedule a tour during the summer and fall.

Our Mayfield Historical Society member and photographer Doug Sieg took these spring photos. He writes, "a mourning dove showing off her (his?) powder blue eye liner, and white trillium growing along Wagners Hollow Road near Nelliston in Montgomery County." Yes, spring is here which leads us to our opening day at the Rice Homestead! The Strawberry Festival and Treasures in the Trunk on Saturday, June 13th, 12-4!

Some beautiful birds in Mayfield lately at the home of Mayfield Historical Society member and photographer Doug Sieg. He writes: The feeders have been quite busy of late. Attached are a bunch of shots of:

An Eastern Towhee (formerly called Rufous Sided Towhee)

Song Sparrows

White Throated Sparrows

Gold Finches

Mourning Doves

Cardinal

Starlings

Common Grackles

A Red Bellied Woodpecker

Gray Squirrel - not a bird, not endangered, sometimes a pest, but comical and photogenic, nonetheless.

I do love wildlife. Here's to the critters around us. Remember, our lives ultimately depend on the same earth that theirs do!
