Since its inception in 1991, Sean Kelly Gallery has been internationally regarded for its diverse, intellectually driven program and a highly regarded roster of artists. The gallery has garnered international attention for its high caliber exhibition program and collaboration with many of the most significant cultural institutions around the world. The gallery opened its first public space at 43 M

ercer Street. During these formative years, it established a reputation for diverse, intellectually driven, unconventional exhibitions. The original list of artists represented; Marina Abramović, James Casebere, Callum Innes, Joseph Kosuth and Julião Sarmento (1948-2021), all of whom are still represented by the gallery today, exemplified the Gallery’s commitment to presenting important and challenging contemporary art. In 2001, Sean Kelly moved to a converted 7,000 square-foot industrial space on 29th Street in the Chelsea gallery district. The spacious location enabled the Gallery to mount increasingly ambitious, museum-quality exhibitions to great critical acclaim. The Gallery’s roster of artists expanded to include Rebecca Horn, Frank Thiel, Laurent Grasso, Peter Liversidge, Anthony McCall, Alec Soth, and Kehinde Wiley. In October 2012, Sean Kelly opened its current 22,000 square foot space at 475 Tenth Avenue in a historic 1914 building. With the gallery’s expansion into the new space, Sean Kelly added internationally acclaimed artists to its roster; David Claerbout, José Dávila, Candida Höfer, Ilse D’Hollander, Idris Khan, Hugo McCloud, Mariko Mori, Liu Wei, and Sun Xun. Sean Kelly has continued to expand its program to include a new generation of exceptional contemporary artists such as Dawoud Bey, Julian Charrière, Landon Metz, Sam Moyer, Shahzia Sikander, Janaina Tschäpe and Wu Chi-Tsung. Over the course of more than thirty years, the Gallery has become a symbol for high quality, thought-provoking contemporary art and conversation, most recently with the launch of Collect Wisely in May 2018. Collect Wisely is a provocative media campaign designed to encourage lively conversation around topics of collecting and connoisseurship. At the heart of this initiative is the Collect Wisely podcast, a series of interviews in which Sean Kelly discusses with collectors their passion for art, artists, and a passion for collecting and connoisseurship. On September 17, 2022, the Gallery opened a major new space in Los Angeles.

The Audacity of Scale considers how scale challenges perception, informs meaning, and influences the viewer’s relationship to the work. Spanning painting, photography, video, works on paper, and sculpture, the exhibition includes a broad roster of international artists and includes works from the microscopic, to the monumental.

Sun Xun is widely known for transforming traditional Chinese ink painting and printmaking techniques into striking, moving images. Featured in the exhibition, The Time Vivarium — Silk Book 1 is an intricate leporello, a folding book featuring acrylic and ink painting on silk that relates to a larger stop-motion animated film. The book and film, based upon his father’s experiences during the Cultural Revolution, reflect upon official histories, state propaganda, and museum dioramas.

Dawoud Bey is a included in the 9th Triennial of Photography Hamburg flagship exhibition, Alliance, Infinity, Love – In the Face of the Other, on view through September 22, 2026. Curated by Mark Sealy, the exhibition brings together over thirty international artists whose works examine photography’s capacity to confront inherited histories, challenge structures of division, and imagine forms of solidarity grounded in relation to others.

The exhibition presents a selection of photographs from Bey’s 2017 series Night Coming Tenderly, Black, which centers on the Underground Railroad. The series imagines the perspective of an escaped enslaved person traveling on a secret route in northeast Ohio as they seek freedom. Displayed in sequence, the images evoke passage through a dark tangle of marshes, woods, and picket fence–lined back yards at night, culminating in an expanse of Lake Erie that stretches to a watery horizon—a view liberating in its promise of freedom but with no sign of land in the distance.

Bey found his title in the closing refrain of Langston Hughes’s 1926 poem Dream Variations, and his series pays homage to another great Harlem-based figure, photographer Roy DeCarava, whose distinctive images of a “world shaped by blackness” inspired Bey’s own velvety dark prints. The enveloping atmosphere of his ghostly nocturnal scenes requires viewers to pause, adjust to the darkness, and imagine the emotional space once held by enslaved people struggling to navigate unfamiliar terrain in search of safety.

Wu Chi-Tsung explores photographic methods and historical Eastern painting traditions through a unique approach to the cyanotype. By hand-creasing Xuan rice paper washed in photo-sensitive chemicals, Chi-Tsung creates intricate compositions that evoke the energetic and diverse qualities of the natural world.

The resulting artwork from Chi-Tsung’s Cyano-College series suggest sublime interpretations of mountainous landscapes or tumultuous oceanic tides. Although derived from a technological process, these works appear strikingly organic as they render the physical contours of various environments.

Combining manual artistic process with photographic technique, Chi-Tsung captures the spiritual depth of Eastern painting traditions, while renewing it with a contemporary aesthetic. See this work in person at our booth at Art Basel, in Hall 2.1, Booth R2.

Few works in the history of modern art have so boldly united artistic creation and financial speculation as Marcel Duchamp’s Monte Carlo Bond. Conceived in 1924, the Monte Carlo Bond proposed an investment strategy, with the thirty intended editions of the Bond representing shares in Duchamp’s company, available for purchase at 500 Francs each.

Duchamp’s plan was to use the proceeds to travel to Monte Carlo and generate profits at the roulette wheel, claiming that he had altogether “eliminated the word ‘chance’” through a system devised to guarantee consistent winnings. Duchamp’s investors would then receive a twenty percent dividend from the venture’s anticipated profits. Due to a lack of success with “investors,” only nine of the thirty planned Monte Carlo Bonds are known to have been assembled, with edition numbers assigned non-sequentially.

Nevertheless, Duchamp spent the summer of 1925 in Monte Carlo at the roulette wheel in an attempt to win and pay out the promised dividends. Whilst this financial venture ultimately failed, the Monte Carlo Bond proved successful as a radical work of art, collapsing distinctions between artwork and contract, collector and investor, aesthetic value and economic exchange.

“Let my work and words edify.” - Lindsay Adams

Now open in celebration of Juneteenth, Lindsay Adams’s commission for the Obama Presidential Center, Weary Blues, spans the Center’s café with a series of fabric silkscreen panels exploring resilience, beauty, and abstract form. We extend our sincerest congratulations to Adams for this outstanding installation!

Translated from her 2024 oil painting, Weary Blues, named after the famed poem by Langston Hughes, Adams’s silkscreen panels carry forward a legacy of Black creative expression. Reflecting on the work with Katie White for Artsy, Adams shared that “Weary Blues visually embodies my practice over the past six years or so. It exists at this nexus of the representational floral and the abstract. The blues and the color in the work are so profound, and I thought that it would offer this space a sense of color and memory.”

Congratulations to Hugo McCloud on his commission Hidden Reflection, for the Obama Presidential Center, now open in celebration of Juneteenth! Installed in the Private Dining Room in Tafari’s Kitchen, McCloud’s painting offers a poignant meditation on President Obama’s lived experience.

Hidden Reflection, rendered in McCloud’s signature single-use plastic and oil paint, this painting traces significant locations from throughout President Obama’s life. In the background, McCloud has layered maps from the President’s places of origin such as Indonesia, Kenya, Chicago, and Hawaii. Gesturing to the impacts of personal memory, McCloud has also depicted several homes that President Obama grew up in.

Speaking on Obama’s legacy with Carol Kino of Town & Country, McCloud expressed that “there are exceptional people in this world,” and by “taking a few of the things that shaped the direction of his life and brought him to the beginning stages of his career,” he aimed to create a work that will give visitors space “to reflect on the things that have shaped them, too.”

García Almanza constructs geometric sculptures that oscillate between abstraction and figuration, drawing on modernist traditions and the visual language of Cubism. In a New Knicks State of Mind. 🏀💙🏀💙🏀💙

Donna Huanca’s paintings are a testament to her multidisciplinary approach, intricately weaving together elements of the human body, natural materials, and immersive experiences. Huanca’s abstract paintings further encapsulate the ephemeral qualities of her performances, merging the fleeting nature of live art with the enduring characteristics of painting.

The surfaces of her works are composed of images of bodies captured during her performances, which are printed onto canvas and layered with vibrant oil paints and natural materials including sand. This intricate process results in a visual tapestry that is rich in texture and color, evoking a sense of movement and fluidity. Drawing inspiration from the cycles of birth, decay, and renewal, Huanca’s artistic practice reflects on transformation, both of the body and the earthly realms.

In doing so, Huanca challenges traditional notions of permanence in painting, offering viewers a compelling exploration of life’s complexities as experienced through the lens of her unique artistic vision.
