M55 Art

M55 Art A partnership of two of the oldest artist-led galleries in New York City. Email: [email protected] M55 Art began in 1969 as 55 Mercer Gallery in Soho.

In 2008 we relocated to Long Island City. In December of 2012 we moved to our current location in the heart of the Chelsea Fine Art District. It is an artist-initiated not-for-profit gallery dedicated to bringing contemporary art exhibitions to the public.

"Practicing Memory / 55 Mercer and the Living Archive," on view until May 30.
One of the participating artists is Judy Russell.

"I began painting in France and my work still bears a French influence. To describe my work I’ll borrow the words of Carrie Moyer: “My painting is where Helen Frankenthaler meets Fernand Leger”. Now my paintings are enhanced by my husband’s illumination.

My paintings convey a myriad of my experiences. Monica Tarantino’s poems always provoke ideas. An unexpected source of images and titles for paintings is my work as an art therapist at the 80th Street Residence for the Memory Impaired on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I enjoy Gertrude Stein-like conversations with the residents. When I praised Cynthia’s drawing she said to me, “There are down feathers inside this train. The train is barreling down!”

In my recent work, I’ve collaborated with Robin Russell to incorporate fluorescent and LED lighting." JR

"For me art is a language that comes down from the beginning of time to the present.
It encapsulates, encodes, and decodes the highest qualities of our culture.
To experience art in our environment is the poetic access to that which is most important creating a kind of Museum or Gallery without walls.
It enriches our personal narrative, the tools for creative visualization.
It is this that enrich the imagination that helps determine the quality of our present and our future."
