Bowery Gallery

The Bowery Gallery is a co-operative art gallery in New York City founded in 1969. The juror for 2011 was Stanley Lewis.

Its mission is to exhibit work of the highest quality from independent artists. The gallery is incorporated as a non-profit organization of representational and non-representational artists. A national competition, sponsored by the gallery in August, has been juried by such notable artists as Nell Blaine, Louis Finkelstein, Lois Dodd, Rosemary Beck, Natalie Charkow, Jane Freilicher, Gabriel Laderm

an, Joan Snyder, Janet Fish, Wilbur Niewald, William Bailey, Bill Jensen, John Walker, Paul Resika, Rackstraw Downes, and renowned art critic Jed Perl.

ZEUXIS: The Oranges of Seville
June 16 - July 3, 2026

Zeuxis presents The Oranges of Seville, a group exhibition of some two dozen works that pay homage to a work by the seventeenth-century Sevillian painter Francisco de Zurbarán. All were produced for this show by the painters of Zeuxis and their guests. This invitational exhibition is on view at the Bowery Gallery from June 16 through July 3, 2026.

Modern art historians have noted the simplicity and serenity of Zurbarán’s only signed still life, Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose (1633). This bodegón masterpiece would also have impressed his contemporaries as a symbol of the Holy Trinity. In this invitational exhibition at Bowery Gallery, the painters of Zeuxis and their guests continue the tradition of deeply observed yet contemporary still-lifes.

Since 1995, Zeuxis, an association of still life painters, has organized dozens of group shows in New York City and around the country. Its exhibitions have been reviewed by The New York Times, The New York Sun, The Hudson Review, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and many other publications.
