A practice shaped by material, memory, and transformation.

Raised in Hawai‘i, Maddux developed an early spiritual connection to color, rhythm, and the natural environment. Her background in textile design remains central to her work, informing a process-driven exploration of pattern, form, and touch.

Through the simple, ancient act of folding, raw canvas becomes sculptural. Stained with luminous washes of pigment and meticulously shaped by hand, each work exists at human scale, evoking the body while navigating the tension between concealment and revelation, surface and depth.

Totem-like and quietly powerful, Maddux’s works invite reflection on transformation, presence, and the ever-expanding potential of creative practice.

Now on view at Gallery Sonder.

‘The Thing In Itself’
On view through 26 January, 2026

Gallery Sonder presents a group exhibition featuring works by Ruben Benjamin, Jae Ford, Noosha Golab, Gary Lang, Sheng Lor, Susan Maddux, Josh Sperling, and Pilar Wiley.

Inspired by Immanuel Kant’s idea that we can never know an object as it truly is, only as it appears through our own perception, the exhibition reflects on the space between reality and interpretation. Through painting, sculpture, textile, and relief, these artists explore how form and color shape the way we encounter the world.

Visit the gallery in Corona del Mar to experience the exhibition.

Now On View | ‘The Thing In Itself’

“We can never know the thing in itself, we know only its appearance, shaped by the conditions of our perception.”
-Immanuel Kant

We are pleased to present a group exhibition examining the space between appearance and reality.

Inspired by Kant’s philosophy of perception, eight artists engage form, color, and material to question how we understand the world around us.

OPENING NEXT WEEK: ‘The Thing In Itself’

Friday November 21st
6:00 - 9:00pm

Corona Del Mar CA 92625

Gallery Sonder is pleased to present ‘The Thing In Itself,’ a group exhibition on view from November 21 through February 16, 2026.

Featuring works by Ruben Benjamin, Jae Ford, Noosha Golab, Gary Lang, Sheng Lor, Susan Maddux, Josh Sperling, and Pilar Wiley, the exhibition explores how form and color shape the way we encounter reality.

Inspired by Immanuel Kant’s idea that we can never know objects as they truly are—only as they appear through the filters of our perception—The Thing In Itself invites viewers to consider not what is seen, but how seeing unfolds.

“We can never know the thing in itself, we know only its appearance, shaped by the conditions of our perception.”

-Immanuel Kant

In these transcendent, surreal dreamscapes, Lydia Baker renders the intimate terrain of care, memory, and transformation. Through jewel-toned figures suspended between reality and reflection, she reimagines the bonds between parent and child, self and other - tracing the emotional and biological threads that connect us.

Symbiosis - now on view at The Annex at Sonder, Corona Del Mar.

“We don’t want a finished story in our paintings. It’s about leaving room for the viewer’s imagination—trusting them to complete the narrative in their own way.” — Herbst & Högman

Dreamlike worlds, staged encounters, and the blur between reality and theatre come alive in this landmark presentation.

‘In the hollow’ - now on view at Sonder, Corona Del Mar through 9 November.

In “Into the light of the dark black night,” light slips in like a whisper through two quiet openings in an otherwise endless dark. In the quiet, light becomes a language - measured, intentional, and deeply felt.
