Today we celebrate the birthday of one of Owosso's most famous citizens James Oliver Curwood. In honor of his day, may we suggest you spend some time exploring the city that he called the nicest place in the world to live in. Go canoeing or fishing in the Shiawassee River, take a walk on one of our many nature trails, visit his castle, or check out one of his many novels at your local library. Help us keep his memory alive. Happy birthday Mr. Curwood!

Betty Mahmoody was born on June 9, 1945. Betty is an author and public speaker. She rose to international fame with her book “Not Without My Daughter”. The book tells her true-life story of a Michigan housewife who found her life turned upside down.

Her vacation to Tehran with her husband, an Iranian doctor, turned into imprisonment for her and her daughter Mahtob. When told she could leave Iran but has no parental rights over her daughter, she managed to escape with the help of a band of undercover friends and strangers. Her escape took her and Mahtob over 500 miles. They were in Iran for 18 months.

In 1991 her book was made into a movie starring Sally Field as Betty.
