The Scioto County Heritage Museum LLC (Museum) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization formed to “collect, preserve, own and display material and artifacts of a historical and antiquarian value relating

to Scioto County, Ohio to include the City of Portsmouth, all its villages and all the rural areas in between” (from our Constitution). While displays of historical artifacts are by nature an integral part of any museum, the mere viewing of such cannot serve any purpose other than conjuring up some nostalgic memory in the viewer. Through constantly evolving exhibits, hands-on experiences, educational programs, lectures, and material for research, all who visit can have a unique and meaningful experience. We have a rich, impressive history in Scioto County that Museum programs can highlight. Those who visit us or are just passing through will go away delighted with what they have discovered. The word will spread. A lifelong audience will emerge.

The Scioto County Heritage Museum recently welcomed guests for a fascinating look into local history during an America 250 Ohio event, “1,000 Miles of Canal: An America 250 Ohio Presentation on the Ohio & Erie Canal in Scioto County.”

Presented by Bill Tipton of the Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail, in partnership with the Community Action Organization of Scioto County and Scioto County Heritage Museum, the program highlighted the vital role the Ohio & Erie Canal played in shaping transportation and economic growth in our region.

As part of April’s America 250 Ohio theme, “Ohio Moves: Transportation,” attendees learned how Scioto County contributed to one of the most significant infrastructure projects of its time—connecting communities, supporting commerce, and leaving behind a legacy that still influences the area today.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped celebrate this important piece of our shared history! For those who missed the event, check out the video below.

This past summer, Scioto County Heritage Museum received a $1,000 grant from ServeOhio, the state’s commission on service and volunteerism, to purchase supplies for Make A Difference Day(Oct. 25) 2025. These funds were used to freshen up the museum’s exterior as part of a community volunteer effort.

Thank you ServeOhio for making this possible and to those who came out to volunteer!

For more information about ServeOhio and its Make A Difference Day please visit https://serveohio.smapply.us/prog/make_a_difference_day_2025/

Make A Difference Day’s purpose is to support projects that create or improve community assets and infrastructure — such as parks, schools, senior centers, community gardens, or low-income homes — through youth volunteer engagement. Projects may span multiple days within the designated window and are designed to be collaborative, involving a wide range of community participants to benefit the broader community.
