‘Tis the season... “The little man hunts the duck and the rabbit, and the pheasant mounted on the wall can no longer remember when, or why, it was shot. The dogs ruffle round in the brush, the spotlight glints off of their studded collars. I think I’m headed in the right direction only to find I’ve been riding the horse backwards all along.”

Case in point: Bradley Wood.

Wood says, “We moved from an artist community in Brooklyn to a town 25 miles north of NYC. It was a huge change that actually inspired me to create narratives about the neighbors I didn’t even know — the wealthy widow, the peculiar old couple at the grocery store. Of course, these characters probably exist more in my mind than in real life.”

What does the pursuit of happiness feel like? Consider, Eric White’s description of viewing a painting in the present moment:

“It’s all so subjective. I’m a “physical media” fetishist and obsessively collect records, films and books. In our increasingly digital and virtual and artificial world, actual objects are becoming more important, almost sacred. Handmade paintings are precious. It can be such a powerful experience to stand in front of a painting… No matter how you slice it, a painting only exists in the present moment of the viewer’s experience, and there is a certain power in that.”

The Pursuit of Happiness runs through November 22nd.

Join us Thursday, Sept. 10th, 5-7 PM, for the opening of "The Pursuit of Happiness". Curated by Gallery Director, Dick Goody, this exhibition explores the way artists mirror and picture the requirements and travails of contemporary life in the quest for happiness.

This group exhibition features Linus Borgo, Matthew Brannon, John Bradford, Marcus Brutus, Amanda Church, Victoria Dugger, Christina Forrer, Emily Harter, Seonna Hong, Hydeon, Mary Jones, Haley Josephs, Jordan Kasey, Pow Martinez, Ali Miller, Maureen O’Leary, Rachel Phillips, Elizabeth Schwaiger, Alison Elizabeth Taylor, Tristan Unrau, Eric White, Bradley Wood, & Areum Yang.

This project is held in conjunction with Oakland University’s multidisciplinary celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
