Last Mile Picture Framing

We have a steady flow of customers that have framing projects that started out as DIY or minor projects, often to be set aside due to lost steam, unexpected complexity, or just changes in priorities.

Sometimes we will get in a frame bought over internet but the picture just wont fit or acrylic / glass needs cutting, or need to add a mat or two. Sometimes they want me to make a modification of other design elements or resize the frame. We are happy to help take these side projects and get them ready to hang.

We call these “Last Mile” projects as a carryover from similar concept used by UPS and other shipping carriers when they use USPS to do the last mile of delivery.

Restored Mirror

Public Domain Photography

You have most likely heard of Edward S. Curtis (Western Native American) and Dorothea Lange (Farm Service Administration) and their incredible photography they (and other photographers) produced during the early 1900s. Most of their work is freely available on the public domain and most notably from the Library of Congress where you can download the images of varying resolution.

After discussing with my daughter who is working to continue designing her pottery, I thought a nice series of pottery related vintage photos from Edward S. Curtis mostly relating to Native American tribes simply framed would work well to complement the pottery wheel organizer we build last year.

Because many of the images were of a lower resolution, we were able to increase the quality, clarity and resolution using some of the image enhancement tools including Adobe Photoshop and the TopazLabs suite of tools. We did make these so that we can swap out the photos over time to keep things fresh.

There is a huge level of satisfaction when everything goes perfectly…

A customer brought in a 3’x4’ canvas original artwork that needed to be stretched and we decided to go with a hand-crafted Sapele wood in a float frame, just like I did for my partner earlier this month.

Stretching went without a hitch, nice and tight, and the frame came out excellent.

Handcrafted Oversized Sapele Float Fame

This is actually for the most important customer, my partner. She had a 27”x59” mixed media stretched canvas print that we have had handing like so many people do, just hang the canvas and move on. We decided to use the choice piece of Sapele lumber we picked up at The Hardwood Store of North Carolina in Gibsonville, NC.

Probably the finest finish I have done, this wood was easy to work with, resisted warping after cutting, sanded easy and took the finish with style.

Doing another one for a customer that liked it so much they went with it as well. They have an original abstract canvas 3’ x 4’ that will need a strainer and stretched, then make the float frame.

Now…can our cat please stop ruining our couches?
