Starkweather Art Center is a non-profit art center located on Main Street in the Village of Romeo, located north of Detroit Michigan. Starkweather owes its existence to a trust created by Helen Starkweather, a lifelong resident of Romeo. Ms. Starkweather taught art and drafting in the Romeo school system for more than forty years. When she died in 1987 at the age of eighty-four, she left her estat

e to the Romeo Historical Society and the Village of Romeo. Her will stipulated that her home and studio at 219 North Main Street be used as an art and cultural center “…dedicated to promoting and fostering the appreciation of art and artisans and to support the preservation of the character and quality of the Village”. In 1989, the Board of Trustees incorporated the Starkweather Society, a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to fulfilling the wishes expressed in Ms. Starkweather’s will. On November 13, 1999, Ms. Starkweather’s former home and studio was officially opened to the public as the Starkweather Arts Center. The Center includes two beautiful exhibit galleries and a sales gallery. Our 2nd floor gallery restoration project was completed in 2009 and has allowed us to launch an Art Education program

In the 20+ years since the incorporation, many volunteers and corporations have contributed to Starkweather’s success. The SAC is dependent in large part on the generosity of its membership dues and volunteer efforts. We are also dependent on, and have been fortunate to receive, major support from taxpayer grants, corporate sponsorships, donations and special event fundraising. The Village of Romeo, Bruce Township, Ford Motor Company, and L&L Products of Romeo–just to name a few–have been especially generous with their financial help. Helen Starkweather understood the value of art in society. It is the goal of the SAC to foster and promote artistic excellence in the Village of Romeo and surrounding communities. By providing quality art experiences through art education, exhibits and events, Starkweather aims to enhance the quality of life in Northern Macomb County.

Maybe some of us started out like this many many moons ago?

On May 26, 1925, Dan Robbins, the inventor of the "paint by number" craft system, was born in Detroit. Robbins attended Cass Technical High School and conceived the idea for paint by number in 1949 after being inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, who would hand out numbered patterns to his apprentices.

🎨 We're paying homage to Robbins with a new paint-by-number style mural that will be installed this summer at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum! You can submit YOUR original art to be considered for the design at detroithistorical.org/mural

On behalf of the Starkweather Clay Studio, we would like to send out a big THANKS to the Romeo Lions Club for a generous donation toward our new clay roller and class expenses. Support like this enables us to keep class costs down and lets more people (especially children) experience art through clay. Our Clay Studio will again be participating in the Empty Bowl Fundraiser which raises money for local food pantries. Romeo Lions support our community!

It's always a pleasure to meet our scholarship winners in person.
Shown is Dave Pyrce with Ava Ioco who will be studying architecture. She also won the Romeo Guild of Art Scholarship!
Also pictured is Grace Venet and Dave with Riley Frederick who will be pursuing her creativity through film and animation among other interests.
A special shout out to Holly Anderson, from the RHS counseling office, who is retiring. We will miss working with her!
And thanks to the Four County Foundation which administers the Starkweather-Garvin Art & Drafting Scholarship.
Alumni Nick Carpenter, studying film editing, and Natalie Silos, at Lawrence Tech, are also scholarship winners this year.
Congrats to all these talented students!
