I thought I would do a quickie demonstration of faux bois or wood graining for our big shop warming party this Saturday. First step was painting a base color on a piece of plywood. Tomorrow I will mix up my glaze and see what I can come up with.

It’s the holiday weekend, but duty calls and I’m in the shop working on some sashes. This project required the replacement of some stiles and bottoms rails, which usually is easy finishing work if they’re painted. These were varnished, however, which means i get to do some color and finish matching to blend the new with the old. The old finish is typical for late 19th century sashes, and I have my secret recipe for matching new wood. Here’s the first step to set the base color, and next comes the varnish.

I’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Good, another member of team Historic Design Consulting. Jonathan will be helping out this summer doing all sorts of restoration work. He’s actually been assisting me now and again for some time, and he’s a joy to have around the shop. Not only can he glaze a window, but he has PhD in History and we discuss all sorts fun topics like the Greek derivation of omphaloskepsis. The entire Historic Design crew knows history, which informs how we perform our restoration work.

Northern Minnesota is dry and there are fire warnings throughout the region. Currently there is a major wildfire just to the north of my wife’s hometown of Two Harbors. Betty’s Pies is safe for now, but several families have had their homes burn. This report says 100 acres have burned, but this was last night and the fire has been burning through the night.
