🇺🇸 Salem’s Bicentennial was nearly 50 years ago—and now the Semiquincentennial is just over a month away!

As we prepare to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we’re taking a look back at Salem’s Bicentennial festivities in 1976. Do you remember the parade? Were you there? We’d love to hear your favorite memories, stories, or photos from that historic day.

If you’d like to explore more of Salem County’s past, stop by the Salem County Historical Society Museum and Research Library. History isn’t just something we preserve—it’s something we share together.

Tell us your Bicentennial memories in the comments! 🇺🇸✨

On Memorial Day 1904, the people of Alloway gathered by horse and carriage to honor the soldiers who served before them. More than 120 years later, we continue that same tradition of remembrance, gratitude, and community. 🇺🇸

This historic photograph captures the unveiling of the Soldiers Monument at the Alloway United Methodist Churchyard — a powerful reminder that Memorial Day has always been about honoring sacrifice and preserving memory for future generations.

As we enjoy the freedoms they fought for, may we never forget those who gave everything. ❤️🤍💙

Our roof is getting an update with a fresh coat of sealant and paint!

Historic buildings require constant care and maintenance, and this project is an important step in protecting our collections for years to come. This section of the building houses our research library, so ensuring a strong, leak-free roof helps safeguard some of our most historic documents and materials.

A big shout-out to Sickler Built, LLC, for their awesome work and attention to detail!

We’re still soaking in the success of this year’s Spring House Tour! Please enjoy a few photos from the reception held in honor of the wonderful homeowners and site owners who opened their doors and shared their historic properties with our guests. The time, work, and hospitality that go into preparing these homes for the tour truly do not go unnoticed, and we are so grateful for their participation.

We also want to extend a special thank you to Norm and Amy Francis for graciously hosting a lovely cocktail hour at their home in Alloway. It was the perfect way to celebrate another successful tour and the people who helped make it possible.

Be sure to follow the pages of the Salem County Historical Society to stay up to date on upcoming events and programs!

What an incredible turnout we had for our Open House Tour last Saturday! We are so grateful to everyone who came out to celebrate and explore the rich history of our community’s beautiful historic homes. It was wonderful seeing so many people enjoying the stories, architecture, and charm that make these houses so special.

If you weren’t able to attend the tour — or if you’d simply like to learn more about the fascinating history featured this year — we still have extra 2026 House Tour booklets available for purchase! These beautifully detailed booklets are just $5.00 each and are filled with photographs, research, and historical information about the homes featured on the tour.

We also have a selection of older House Tour booklets available in our used book sale for only $2.00 each. These past editions are a wonderful way to learn about historic houses that may not have been included on this year’s tour and make a great addition to any local history collection.

Whether you are a longtime history enthusiast, a homeowner researching local architecture, or simply curious about the stories behind these treasured homes, these booklets are a fantastic resource.

Stop by the Society Tuesday through Saturday from 12:00–4:00 PM to pick up your copies while supplies last! We look forward to seeing you soon.
