RSVP to join us for the next installment of the Mixta Cultura Plática y Merienda Series featuring a special community zine workshop with Joseph Decilos ✂️📚✨

Using colorful paper, collage techniques, and photographs from the Rio Grande Valley, participants will create their own mini zines inspired by storytelling, identity, culture, and community. Rooted in Joseph’s documentary practice and love for zine-making, this workshop invites participants to reflect on personal and collective experiences through images and creative sequencing.

Raised in South Texas and now based in New York, Joseph Decilos is a visual documentarian and artist whose work explores themes of faith, folklore, migration, q***r spaces, and the cultural intersections that shape life along the borderlands.

Come enjoy an afternoon of creativity, conversation, and merienda as part of our Mixta Cultura: CVA exhibition programming.

Good morning, familia cultural!

As part of our ongoing partnership with our local VA offices, and in light of April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we will be hosting "Unmasking the Silence: Healing Through Art" this Saturday, 04/25/2026, at the San Benito Cultural Center from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM.

This VA led peer conversation and mask-making session is designed to guide Veterans through their recovery journeys with Military Sexual Trauma (MST) in a supportive space operating at their comfort level.
Your privacy and comfort are important to us. Quiet space is available and you share what you wish during your time with us — masks can be taken home or displayed with the VA.

Space is limited to 20 participants — so, please register using the QR Code or through this link https://varedcap.rcp.vaec.va.gov/redcap/surveys/?s=XTACPRH8NH9EHDPH.
While this is designed for Veterans, caregivers and partners are welcome!

Saludos Familia Cultura!!!

I’m thrilled and deeply grateful for everyone who joined us for our transformative panel discussion, The Architecture of Vulnerability.

It was truly inspiring to witness such a thoughtful and open exchange of ideas, grounded in the realities and experiences of our borderland communities. Conversations like these remind me of the power of coming together to listen, reflect, and grow collectively.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible panelists, Dr. Danielle Lopez, Dani Marrero Hi, Jesse Miller and Ray Smith for sharing their insights and nourishing perspectives. Your presence activated the space, and the energy in the room was truly palpable.

I also want to thank my team, Joaquin, Jose, and Denise. Your support, dedication, and belief in this work make it possible to bring these ideas to life. I feel incredibly supported and grateful to be on this journey together.

Good morning, familia cultural!

We know there is some rain forecasted for this weekend, but it seems like Plaza San Benito is getting its share of water just a tad early.

While our facilities department makes sure the area is back in working order, the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum and the San Benito Cultural Center will remain closed for the day, 04/16/2026, for maintenance.

We hope to see you soon though, and we want to take this moment to remind you that we have two brilliant exhibitions on view in our two spaces: Ray Smith's "Before the Fall: The Architecture of Vulnerability" and "Mixta Cultura: CVA" — you have through to May 23rd and June 27th respectively to visit these unique perspectives on a lived borderlands experience!

Hola, familia cultural!

We hope you all had a lovely Easter weekend despite the gloomy weather, and if you do not celebrate, we hope that you rested and spent the time well with family either way 😊

Just a quick update that the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum and San Benito Cultural Center will remain closed in preparation for a City of San Benito event this week (04/06/2026 - 04/10/2026). We will return to our regular hours next week!

However, you can still engage with us through our socials either through looking back at the virtual tour for "Before the Fall: The Architecture of Vulnerability" or keeping an eye out in the week ahead for the start of our virtual through "Mixta Cultura: CVA".

¡Buenos días, familia cultural!

Por desgracia, esto no es una broma del Día de los Inocentes: hemos llegado al final de nuestro recorrido virtual por la exposición de Ray Smith "Antes de la caída: La arquitectura de la vulnerabilidad". Sin embargo, no se preocupen, ¡aún tienen casi dos meses completos para visitar esta exposición individual si aún no han tenido la oportunidad de hacerlo!

Dicho esto, bienvenidos a nuestra última parada: los dos Biombos Fronterizos restantes que completan el conjunto de 17 incluidos en esta exposición.

Aquí vemos una fusión similar entre la publicidad nostálgica al estilo del pop art y la advertencia de peligro, tal y como hicimos en la parada del lunes; aunque aquí, las imágenes de pop art a las que quizá nos hayamos acostumbrado son sustituidas por una calavera realista.
De hecho, nuestro vínculo más concreto con los grandes almacenes surrealistas por los que hemos estado navegando existe esta vez en forma de texto, con "HOY GRAN DESCUENTO" escrito en la superficie del plexiglás espejado.

Su pareja presenta una imagen que recuerda a un envoltorio de caramelo, con su centro de forma ovalada flanqueado por dos mechones que se extienden desde puntas retorcidas. Sin embargo, hay una diferencia notable en la apariencia, ya que el mechón inferior se asemeja más a un envoltorio tradicional de caramelo duro y el superior se transforma en una llama.
Hay dos formas en el centro de la imagen que recuerdan vagamente a un signo de igualdad.

Si interpretamos la imagen íntegramente como una llama, entonces estamos siguiendo un hilo directo hacia las nubes en forma de hongo y las erupciones presentes a lo largo de toda la obra. En ese caso, se nos presenta una vez más una imagen de peligro y destrucción.
Si la interpretamos como el envoltorio de caramelo en transformación, entonces complicamos aún más la imagen: ahora conectamos con el concepto general de que algo dulce y nostálgico es el fino velo que se interpone entre nosotros y ese peligro o destrucción que se avecina — una imagen enmarcada, construida y diseñada en torno a las vulnerabilidades de los espacios en los que existimos.
