Exhibition EXTENDED to May 2, 2026!

What is a lumen print? If you do an online search then the general explanation is that it is a photogram made using cameraless process in which objects are placed atop gelatin silver paper and exposed to direct sunlight.

Why we love Moira McDonald's lumen prints? We love that light and time are the "objects" and that McDonald gives form to the formless. Her meticulous composition of sheets and strips of vintage silver paper creates a luminescence quality of an array of light one might see at dawn or dusk. Through her lumen print assemblages, McDonald captures the seasons as an abstract without form.

Someone questioned if the work are photographs. We said "yes" at the time but we should've corrected ourself - the work are photograms, photograms of light and time captured on surfaces from a different era.

Most photographers are light chasers looking to capture that one magical moment with the perfect combination of aperture & shutter speed.

For artist Moira McDonald, who embraces cameraless process in her practice, it's rarely about one moment. The work on view in McDonald's solo exhibition "Locomotion of Light & Time" are the results of weeks and months-long exposure of vintage black & white photo paper, not just to light, but also the elements: the wind curls the paper, the fog leaves its marks, the sun creates colors one finds in the sky at dawn & dusk while time moves silently across the surface.
