Ambigrams are words or symbols designed to be read from more than one perspective — often appearing the same when rotated, flipped, or viewed in a mirror. Blending typography with visual illusion, they transform language into both image and puzzle.

John Langdon (1946–2026) was one of the pioneering figures of this rare art form, developing ambigrams in the 1970s through an interest in symmetry, wordplay, and the philosophical balance of opposites. Inspired by the yin–yang symbol and the visual mind games of M. C. Escher, Langdon sought to do with words what Escher did with images—creating designs that reveal multiple meanings depending on how they are seen.

As Langdon once said:
“An ambigram is a word that has managed to sit still long enough to look at itself in the mirror.” Join us on Art After Dark to see this celebrate this artist's legacy.

We just received some new pieces by Christina McPhee (). If you haven't met Christine, she is one of the most fascinating people to listen to, and that is witnessed in her painting.

McPhee's paintings often braid together research, memory, and landscape—treating abstraction as a way of tracing the entanglement of place, history, and lived experience. Extremely prolific, her work has been exhibited internationally, and is held in collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the International Center for Photography, among many others.

A few of the pieces we have of McPhee's are from her LAND BACK series, and her research on landscape is examined by an anti-colonialist lens.

Interested in hosting an event? You're in luck! Ask about our event rental offerings, which we are busy upgrading and refining so all your needs are in one place. This past weekend we opened our doors to the AAUW (American Association of University Women) chapters of SLO, Arroyo Grande, and Morro Bay. In the past we've shared our spacious, light-filled downtown location for the Central Coast Interior Designers socials (), SLO County Arts local art shows (), SLO International Film Festival lounge and screenings (), private parties, independent photography shoots, and more. Not only do we help connect you to our favorite local musicians and wine partners for an event, but we are happy to custom hang artwork to compliment the vibe. Reach out or dm us to learn more!

by .daanechesnut 💕 These pieces are mixed media on metal and both 30x66; they were originally painted to be displayed horizontally but we opted for a vertical display instead since it better suited the room. Besides custom orders and art advising services, EDNA offers complimentary virtual installs of artwork in your home so you can visualize all of your options before committing to a piece of artwork!

Happy Valentine's Day from us at EDNA Contemporary! We hope the love in your life inspires you to create something beautiful and lasting. 💕 Pictured is Camille Claudel (left) and Jessie Lipscomb (right) in their studio on rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs, Paris, 1887. Claudel is working on the plaster version of L’Abandon, which was her breakthrough piece. Claudel wrote to a friend: 'I regularly work 12 hours a day, from seven in the morning until seven in the evening, and when I get home, it’s impossible for me to remain standing.’ The sculpture is read as an allegory for her tempestuous affair with Auguste Rodin.

Sometimes we are lucky to be visited by the artists we represent. This past week we had artist Jesús Labandeira pass through. He visited the Central Coast while en route from Greece to Japan.

Labandeira prints photographs on handmade Washi paper (a traditional Japanese technique). The softness of the paper, textured and sometimes as sheer or delicate as lace, float like memories or clouds; while the imagery (a pool ladder, an anonymous woman from rhe 1950s, or a roller coaster) appear as symbols in dreams. Photographs are engraved and painted with ink on the paper. Lyrical and provocative, they depict scenes overexposed in the extreme light: August (summer) light in Greece, and January (winter) snow in Coney Island.

As he says: "I make my own paper — to try to capture that texture or some other element that was lost while overexposing."

Come see these pieces in person, or stay tuned for our "whisper show" of Labandeira this Spring!
