Guess Who Put the Glad in the Gladiolus?

Hint: he'll be 177 years young!

Before he got his clever hands on them, gladioli came in pretty colors, but the stems were wimpy and the flowers were few and far between.

He fixed that.

Working by the acre and half-acre, crossing domesticated and natural varieties, always on the look-out for the one or two outstanding specimens - he transformed the pretty little ingenue into the stunning showstopper she is today.

Guess Who Switched Off the Color of a Blackberry?

Hint: he'll be 177 years young!

He *says* he created the white blackberry so that ladies could eat blackberry tarts without staining their gloves.

But *I* think he did it just because he could!

Guess who spent 17 years on a single flower?

Hint: he'll be 177 years young!

He had fond memories of a little field daisy from his boyhood in Massachusetts.

And he had an ambitious list of improvements: whiter petals, brighter center, larger flower, strong straight stalk, good for gardens and flower arrangements. Everything, in fact, but a sweet scent (Shasta Daisies don't smell good!)

It took him four different parent plants from the US, Europe and Japan. And it took him 17 years. But he fit 2 generations per year because California has a very long growing season. (His brothers were right when they told him to leave Massachusetts and come out to California.)

Guess who fostered a romance between a plum and an apricot?

Hint: he'll be 177 years young!

Plumcots, pluots, apriums, apriplums - lots of delicious crosses between these different Prunus species.

And he was the first to do this kind of match-making deliberately and commercially.

Approximately 25% of the 800+ plants he introduced were stone fruit - including these intriguing crosses.

It's not too late to join our 2026 Volunteer Training - starting this Saturday, March 7.

We have opportunities for Docents, Gardeners and Gift Shop Volunteers.

Whether you have an abiding interest in history, love to get your hands in the dirt, or just want to get out of the house and talk to different people - we have a Volunteer role that will suit.

Docents & Gift Shop Volunteers work three 3.5-hour shifts a month from April to October. Gardeners work two 3-hour morning shifts a month year-round.

Training is Saturdays March 7-14 9:00-2:30 for everyone, and a shorter session Mar 21 for Docents & Gift Shop. (If you can't make all 3 sessions we can make accommodations.)

If this isn't for you, we encourage you to forward it to any friends or family who might be interested. Thanks!
