As the nation celebrates , you may see some trolls claim that the Proclamation freed no one. This is, of course, complete hooey.

The proclamation freed thousands of enslaved people on the day signed it. Look at the red on this map from "North & South." Read the article: https://ow.ly/HGFX50ZeJ0v

More importantly, the proclamation meant every time US soldiers captured new territory, the enslaved people there were freed. It didn't happen all at once, but it was the proclamation that changed the legal status of these people to "free."
