When you’re building a railroad to nowhere, how do you make the journey worthwhile? …. If you’re railroad magnate Henry Bradley Plant, in the midst of the sand swamps that would be Tampa, you construct the most astonishingly magnificent hotel of its day, then fill it with treasures from around the world. With its splendid Moorish architecture, opulent furnishings, and spectacular tropical gardens,

Plant’s Tampa Bay Hotel attracted a host of celebrated guests, from Teddy Roosevelt to Sarah Bernhardt to Babe Ruth. Plant Museum and the authentically restored rooms of the Tampa Bay Hotel will transport you back to a time of indulgent 10-course meals, waltzing on the verandah and alligator hunting by moonlight…The journey is still worthwhile.

Join Executive Director Dr. Charles McGraw Groh for a look behind the scenes at the Museum. Because fabric naturally deteriorates over time, finding original textiles from the historic Tampa Bay Hotel’s 40-year run is incredibly rare.

Today, we’re highlighting two remarkable survivals:

🏆 Original Carpeting: A rare surviving piece is on display, plus a framed section preserved in another exhibit room.

🪑The "Reverse" Chair: An extraordinary piece of conservation where the original upholstery was saved by flipping it to reveal its preserved backside!

Plan your visit to the Henry B. Plant Museum to check them out in person. For more information visit https://www.plantmuseum.com

Museum Director Dr. Charles McGraw Groh shares an authentic historical captain's log kept by James T. Decker, commander of the S.S. Mascot, spanning the years 1892 to 1894. This crucial document chronicles his routine maritime voyages connecting Tampa, Key West, and Cuba when the cigar manufacturing industry first established its deep roots in the Tampa Bay region.

It wasn't just smooth sailing, though. This log exposes the intense realities of 19th-century maritime travel.
