Lansingburgh Historical Society The headquarters of the Lansingburgh Historical Society is located in the
Herman Melville house at 114th Street at 1st Avenue in Lansingburgh.

The headquarters is open to groups and individuals by appointment by calling
(518) 235-3501. We have no paid staff and receive no regular public funding. We welcome additional members and encourage participation and donations.

The historic Van Schaick Mansion in Cohoes will be open to the public on Sunday, September 13, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Come and enjoy live music, “gifts” from our garden, meet a militia military officer, and play colonial games. Light refreshments will be served and are being sponsored by Hannaford. Admission to the grounds and cemetery is free, guided tours of the mansion will be available at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., for a $5 donation.

On Saturday, September 12, 2026, the Lansingburgh Historical Society will host a lively talk by historian Russ VanDervoort.

Russ will talk about the exciting events surrounding “Jumbo” the elephant and the P. T. Barnum Circus coming to Troy.

What could be more exciting than that you say? Well come to the talk and find out. The Historical Society is located at the Melville House, 2 114th Street, Troy, NY Doors open at 10 am and talk starts at 10:30 am. Tours of the house follow for those interested until 2 pm
There will be a $10 donation at the door and no reservations required

When it's Herman Melville's 207th Birthday, you really have to go big! As big as a Whale!

Check out these amazing cupcakes we'll have at tomorrow's Celebration at the 1786 Herman Melville House!

Doors open at 10 AM, Local Historian Michael Barrett will speak at 10:30 on Herman Melville's Maternal Grandfather, The Hero of Fort Stanwix, Peter Gansevoort! (Yes, that just up the Northway Gansevoort!)

The admission of $10 supports the work of the Lansingburgh Historical Society. Come, enjoy the lecture, have a cupcake, and check out one of the oldest homes in our area.

No reservations needed, come early for a good seat!
