The DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun and Museum is a 10-acre historic retreat designed and built by Arizona artist Ted DeGrazia. It is home to a colorful array of DeGrazia originals, including oil paintings, watercolors, ceramics and sculptures.

There’s something special about the simplicity of this piece. With his head bowed and a tiny pink bird hovering nearby, St. Francis is shown in a quiet moment that reflects his well-known love of animals and nature.

DeGrazia returned to St. Francis throughout his career, exploring the saint’s life through his own distinctive artistic style.

And that little pink bird might just be our favorite detail. 🐦

A little color, a few simple lines, and a whole lot of character.

This 1962 watercolor by Ted DeGrazia is a great example of how much he could express with so little. The soft blue background, playful figures, and loose sketching give this piece a personality all its own.

Sometimes the simplest works are the most interesting to look at.

Two roosters, two completely different personalities. 🐓

Ted DeGrazia returned to chickens and roosters again and again throughout his career—so often that a 1960 profile called the fighting rooster a “DeGrazia trademark.”

These two untitled works are a great example of how much he could change the feeling of a subject simply through color. One fiery red, the other cool green, both surrounded by those great swirling brushstrokes.

There’s just something about this one. The oversized hat, the tiny flower baskets, and those pops of purple against the darker background, it has so much character while still being unmistakably DeGrazia.

Father Serra by Ted DeGrazia.

DeGrazia became fascinated with Fray Junípero Serra, even retracing the missionary’s travels through California. His studies eventually inspired The Rose and the Robe, a series of paintings chronicling Serra’s journey and the early California missions.

The roses seen here carry special significance—DeGrazia wrote of Serra encountering a rose in the wilderness that reminded him of Spain, an image that helped inspire the series’ title.
