LA HISTORIA COMIENZA. The Story Begins.

Bienvenidos! Something extraordinary is rolling into Tucson this winter.

Beginning December 5th, the Museum proudly presents the bilingual Smithsonian Institution’s “Lowrider Culture in the United States/ Cultura Lowrider en Los Estados Unidos.” Supplemented by our wonderful Tucson lowrider community with cars, bikes, photography and history this is a story of rolling art not to be missed!

Born after World War II, the lowrider movement emerged as young Mexican Americans transformed everyday automobiles into expressions of orgullo, creativity, craftsmanship, engineering and communidad. Every painted flourish, every engraved chrome detail, and every hand-stitched interior became a reflection of identity and family traditions. Exhibition through March 7th.

This exhibition is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the National Museum of American History, receiving support from the Latino Initiatives Pool, administered by the National Museum of the American Latino.

Locally, we gratefully acknowledge the generous support of the Anna Cohn Fund and the Arizona Commission of the Arts, whose support makes this exhibition and its programming possible. The Museum also extends its heartfelt thanks to Tucson’s Lowrider Clubs, vehicle owners, and collectors who are helping us bring this exhibition home to Tucson.

The walls of Tucson have been telling his stories for years. Now, experience them on canvas! Known as one of Tucson’s most celebrated muralists, Ignacio Garcia brings the vibrant spirit of the Sonoran Desert, its people, and its rich cultural heritage into an extraordinary collection of fine art paintings. This rare exhibition “ Ignacio Garcia: Los Sonoras Paintings” opens September 23rd in the Museum. Offering an intimate look beyond the monumental walls that have made him a hometown favorite, this exhibition reveals the emotion, color, and storytelling that defines Ignacio’s artistic vision.

We can’t believe how pink our southwest-scapes can be! What a lovely capture of our pink time by local artist Judith Johnson. “ Pink Clouds” is on view in our Museum’s Gallery for the spectacular summer art show and sale “ Colors of the Southwest.” This is a very fun show and we’d love for you to see all of the gorgeous colors reflected in the paintings so come in soon Wednesday through Sunday 12-4 are our summer hours.
