Vincennes University is the oldest college in Indiana and was founded by William Henry Harrison as Jefferson Academy in 1801 and incorporated as Vincennes University in 1806. William Henry Harrison was first Chairman of the Board. He was appointed to be Governor of the Indiana Territory in May of 1800. Before that he studied at Hampden Sydney College in VA and studied medicine at the University of PA. He builds Grouseland 1802-1804, father's 5 children by this time (ultimately 10) served as Thomas Jefferson's Indian agent and negotiated for over 50 million acres for westward expansion of America. He later becomes a General during the War of 1812, a U.S. Congressman and a Foreign Minister to Colombia, South America before culminating that career in the White House...a worthy testament for higher education.
