Grouseland is the home Harrison built for his family and Center for Territorial Government with fortress features while he served as Gov of the vast IN Territory from age 27 to 39. Grouseland (1804) is the home of William Henry Harrison, 9th President of the United States (1841). It is the first brick home built in Indiana and served as the Indiana territorial governor's mansion (1804-1812). It is

a National Historic Landmark that was saved by the Daughters of the American Revolution (1909) and managed today by Grouseland Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization, dedicated to the ongoing preservation of the mansion and education mission of telling the story of Indiana's early settlement and territorial organization.

Grouseland will be hosting the 8th in the 250th Committee Celebration- 2nd Saturday Speaker Series on August 8, 2026 at 2pm at Grouseland. This is a free program to encourage participation and learning in honor of our country's 250th. Nature enthusiast, local attorney, President of Grouseland Foundation, and voracious reader of local, regional and national history, Jonathan Feavel, will share his insights about the evolution of the Wabash in Vincennes. Refreshments will be provided by the Knox County Community Learning Kitchen. On this day, June 18, in 1841, after considerable debate, Congress passed a bill submitted by John Quincy Adams to pay Anna Harrison a one-time stipend of $25,000.00 due to the death of William Henry Harrison. He was not in office long enough to receive his salary. Anna was also given free postage for the remainder of her life. She maintained a room devoted to the legacy of the President at their North Bend, Ohio property and it was written that when visitors stopped by to pay their respects and they asked for a souvenir signature, Anna would cut one off of the bottom of a letter until there were no more.
