A look back at Halloween on the Hill through the years.

From astronauts, superheroes, and a very convincing Mandalorian to mad scientists, witches, and one excellent Steamship Authority ferry costume, these photos capture some of the creativity and fun that have filled the Museum grounds each October.

TOMORROW: Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket went head-to-head to document the most wildlife—and the results were wild.

More than 250 people took part in the first Inter-Island BioBlitz, logging over 16,500 observations of the plants, birds, insects, fungi, and other living things that make our Islands home.

Join Matt Pelikan of BiodiversityWorks to find out what participants discovered, how a phone can become a powerful tool for noticing the natural world around you, and—most importantly—which Island won.

You’ll also learn how to join the Vineyard team when the Inter-Island BioBlitz returns in 2027.

If you have ever looked at a bird, bug, mushroom, or weird little shoreline creature and thought, “What the hell is that?” this one is for you.

Who lies beneath our feet?

Roughly half of the Vineyard’s 19th-century dead may rest in unmarked graves. Some were buried outside known cemeteries. Entire burial grounds have disappeared from the landscape—while others have only recently been rediscovered.

This Thursday, 10/29, Island historian Chris Baer returns for Tales from the Grave: Curious Burial Places of Martha’s Vineyard, an evening of historic photographs, lost graveyards, and the stories of the people laid to rest there.

Come early for a 4pm mingle in First Light Café, then join us at 5pm for the talk.

A boat to climb aboard. A slide to ride down. Sheep to find—and, this Sunday, real sheep to meet.

Join us for the opening reception of "Fleeced! An American Revolution Story", a new exhibition for children and families inspired by Grey’s Raid, the 1778 moment when British troops arrived on Martha’s Vineyard and left with thousands of sheep, cattle, and more.

For the opening only, Slough Farm will bring live sheep to the Museum for children to pet and interact with. Inside the exhibition, young visitors can explore the boat, peek through portholes, search for hidden sheep, try on costumes, and discover this wild piece of Island history through play.

The plants growing just beyond your door have a lot to say—if you know how to listen.

Join author and forager Rebecca Gilbert today for “Foraging with Curiosity: Plants, Place and Connection,” a conversation about wild plants, plant communication, and the deeper relationship we can build with the places we call home.

Arrive at 4pm for a pre-talk mingle in First Light Café. The program begins at 5pm, and there may even be a little something to taste.

The Trustees of Reservations and the Museum are collaborating to preserve the history of The Brickyard.

We’re looking to connect with anyone who has a personal connection to this place. Maybe your grandfather worked there, maybe your family has passed down stories about the clay pits or the schooners that carried bricks off-Island, or maybe you simply grew up knowing this land. Whatever the thread, we’d love to hear it. We’re inviting people to sit down for an in-person recorded conversation. Storytime Saturdays return on Saturday, October 31, at 10:30am. Join Eloise “Weezie” Welz for stories, imagination, and a welcoming Museum morning for young children and their caregivers.

Come in costume if you’d like, then make a day of it—or come back each Saturday through November for more stories.

One artist, two worlds—and plenty to discover the closer you look.

“The Two Worlds of Denys Wortman” explores the life and work of one of America’s most widely read cartoonists, whose career bridged New York City and Martha’s Vineyard. Encounter paintings, original cartoons, archival material, and an interactive way into Wortman’s distinctive visual world.

What does Tribal sovereignty mean — and what responsibilities does the United States hold toward Tribal Nations?

Join us tonight for “Wampanoag Sovereignty, Relationality, and Responsibility,” an online lecture with Brad Lopes (Aquinnah Wampanoag), Education and Public Program Manager at the Aquinnah Cultural Center.

Through key historical moments and the continuing experience of the Wampanoag community, Lopes will examine the systems that have challenged Tribal sovereignty, as well as the enduring resistance, persistence, and survivance of Wampanoag people.
