Love, desire, identity.

None of these are new. And none of them have ever been simple.
In Parmigianino’s painting, Cupid / Eros / Amor deliberately resists clear categorisation: the body remains ambiguous, the gaze provocative, the composition charged with seduction, power and voyeurism. Suspended between heavenly and earthly love, between desire and yearning, the work reflects on how complex human identity and attraction were already being negotiated during the Renaissance.

Today, the painting reminds us that diversity is not a modern phenomenon, but has always been part of human experience and cultural history. The freedom to love, to desire, and to define one’s own identity is not a trend or a debate, it is a fundamental human right.

Smoke in the air, glittering pennants on the Thames, and London at the height of its eighteenth-century splendour ⛵️🌊

With “The River Thames on Lord Mayor’s Day”, Canaletto transformed a civic celebration into a grand spectacle - capturing the energy, ambition, and power of a rising metropolis. That’s one of the reasons why the painting became the star of our new Canaletto & Bellotto posters. Maybe you’ve already spotted some of them around Vienna 👀

This masterpiece is on loan from the Lobkowicz Collections in Prague and is currently on display in our exhibition Canaletto & Bellotto. And if you’re craving even more Canaletto, enjoy a 40% discount at the Lobkowicz Palace Museum by simply presenting your KHM exhibition ticket 🎟️

What's written in the stars for gemini? ♊️

☀️🌙 This month, we turn to one of mythology’s most iconic sibling pairs: Apollo and Artemis, the divine twins born to Zeus and Leto.

🏺 On this ancient Greek vessel, Apollo and Artemis stand on either side of an altar engaged in a sacred ritual. Apollo (holding a kithara in his left hand) extends a bowl for Artemis to pour water into it, which he will then offer to Zeus in the flames below.

✨ In Greek mythology, Apollo and Artemis, symbolise the duality of sun and moon. Apollo is associated with light, music and healing, while Artemis is revered as the goddess of the hunt, the wilderness and the moon. Much like Gemini itself, the divine twins symbolise the harmony between opposing forces.

🔮 Gemini :
Gemini’s dual nature is often mistaken for indecision, but perhaps the stars are reminding you that your ability to see different perspectives is actually your strength. Like Apollo and Artemis, your greatest power may lie in balancing intellect with intuition, spontaneity with reflection - and knowing when each should take the lead.

Happy Birthday, Bellotto 🎨
Did you know that Bernardo Bellotto often painted under the name “Canaletto” the same name as his famous uncle?

Even today, their works are sometimes mixed up.
Bellotto became famous for his incredibly detailed city views, known as vedute.

After World War II, his paintings even helped reconstruct parts of Warsaw’s historic city centre.

The paintings are not only masterpieces of art history they also became valuable documents for architects, historians and urban planners.

In this painting, the gardens of Schönbrunn unfold in carefully shaped lawns and tree-lined avenues, while 18th-century Vienna stretches out in the background. If you look closely, you can spot landmarks that still define the city today including St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Karlskirche and the Upper Belvedere.

Mother’s Day 💐

A child watches attentively as her mother peels an apple.

In Gerard ter Borch’s The Apple Peeler, this quiet domestic scene reflects historical ideals of motherhood shaped by care, discipline and restraint. The act of peeling the apple becomes a subtle symbol of care work: attentive, repetitive and often unseen.

While the painting was created in the 17th century, its themes still resonate today. Motherhood takes many forms, shaped by very different social realities and expectations.

On Mother’s Day, we celebrate all mothers and mother figures and reflect on the visible and invisible forms of care that sustain everyday life. 💐
