Laurence Sturla – Fieldnotes

Laurence Sturla (b. 1992, Swindon, United Kingdom) creates sculptures that evoke the remnants of industrial systems while simultaneously suggesting anatomical structures and organic processes. Working with clay, he folds earlier, unfired fragments back into new forms, producing surfaces that appear weathered and marked by their own past. Understood as both objects and archives, each sculpture is layered with material memory, registering cycles of transformation and a continuous process of accumulation, breakdown and renewal. His ‘Fieldnotes’ series presented in our current exhibition ‘Lebt und arbeitet in Wien’ recalls disused machinery – pipes, valves or engine parts – yet their function remains ambiguous.

Laurence Sturla (geb. 1992, Swindon, Großbritannien) schafft Skulpturen, die gleichzeitig an Überbleibsel industrieller Systeme, anatomische Strukturen und organische Prozesse erinnern. Er arbeitet mit Ton und verarbeitet nicht gebrannte Stücke aus vorherigen Werken zu neuen Formen, sodass Oberflächen entstehen, die verwittert und von ihrer eigenen Vergangenheit gezeichnet wirken. Sowohl als Objekte als auch als Archive verstanden, besteht jede Skulptur aus verschiedenen Schichten materieller Erinnerung, die Transformationskreisläufe und damit kontinuierliche Prozesse aus Ansammlung, Zusammenbruch und Erneuerung speichert. In unserer aktuellen Ausstellung „Lebt und arbeitet in Wien“ ist seine Serie „Fieldnotes“ zu sehen, die an stillgelegte Maschinerie – Rohre, Ventile oder Motorteile – erinnert, deren Funktion jedoch uneindeutig bleibt.

Visiting Judith Eisler’s studio

Judith Eisler’s (b. 1962, Newark, United States) subjects are second-hand. Rather than painting from real life, she paints images taken from film stills that are composed by a director or cinematographer. Their apparent spontaneity is thus artfully constructed, story-boarded, rehearsed, selected from multiple takes and perfected in the editing room. The artist sifts through films, viewing countless frames to find ones that arrest her attention for different reasons. For the ‘Lebt und arbeitet in Wien’ exhibition, Eisler has produced three new paintings. ‘Brooklyn Bridge’ (2026) quotes from the 1983 film ‘Variety’, ‘Gunther and Harry 2’ (2026) from the 1970 film ‘Götter der Pest’ and finally, ‘Malina’ (2026) is taken from a 1991 film adaptation of Ingeborg Bachmann’s novel. The scenes prompt questions about what the subjects or we are looking at.

Judith Eislers (geb. 1962 Newark, USA) Motive stammen aus zweiter Hand. Anstatt nach dem Leben zu malen, entspringen ihre Sujets Filmstills, die von Regisseur*innen oder Kameramännern*frauen komponiert wurden. Ihre vermeintliche Spontaneität beruht auf einem Storyboard und ist damit kunstvoll konstruiert, wurde geprobt, aus verschiedenen Fassungen ausgewählt und während des Editierens perfektioniert. Die Künstlerin durchforstet Filme und betrachtet unzählige Einzelbilder, auf der Suche nach einem, das aus unterschiedlichen Gründen ihre Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zieht. Für die Ausstellung „Lebt und arbeitet in Wien“ hat Eisler drei neue Bilder geschaffen. „Brooklyn Bridge“ (2026) zitiert den Film „Variety“ (1983), „Gunther and Harry 2“ (2026) stammt aus dem Film „Götter der Pest“ (1970) und „Malina“ (2026) hat sie der gleichnamigen Verfilmung aus dem Jahr 1991 von Ingeborg Bachmanns Roman entnommen. Auf unterschiedliche Arten fesseln die Szenen unsere Aufmerksamkeit und werfen Fragen danach auf, was wir oder die Dargestellten anschauen.

Artforum Fall Previews
Artforum editors on twenty-seven exhibitions opening between September and December

Magali Reus at Kunsthalle Wien
November 27, 2026–May 2, 2027

Magali Reus’s seamless sculptures have a hallucinogenic quality, just unrecognizable enough to prompt inspection and reveal themselves as inscrutable. In recent exhibitions, Reus has shown cartoonish fish skeletons punctuated by candy-colored vertebrae; plastic automotive parts adorned with giant gold fish hooks; and ceramic yogurt jars with tondo-like paintings on their lids. At Kunsthalle Wien, Reus will present a group of new works that promise to inject levity into the fetishistically sober traditions of Viennese art and architecture. Drawing from the city’s myriad design movements, Reus seems poised to rework the gold, steel, and marble of the Austrian capital, allowing the materials to bend under their otherwise unbearable weight. —Theo Belci

Lukas Posch

Lukas Posch (b. 1988, Hall in Tirol, Austria) works across the threshold of figuration and abstraction, creating compositions in which precisely rendered forms coexist with imagery that remains deliberately open to interpretation. His paintings often feature openings, portals or framed sections that function as visual entry points, while simultaneously drawing attention to the work’s status as both image and object. Across his work, Posch introduces pictograms, icons and symbolic shortcuts that draw on a shared visual vocabulary. Constellations, architectural interiors, fragments of figures or diagrammatic structures appear alongside more ambiguous shapes and fields of colour, evoking references from art history, design and the circulation of images in contemporary media. The resulting paintings feel oddly familiar, evading full deciphering and any clear narrative resolution.

Two of his paintings are on view at Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz in the ‘Lebt und arbeitet in Wien’ exhibition.

Ludwig Kittinger – Charlie & Toni

Ludwig Kittinger (b. 1977, Graz, Austria) develops sculptures that reflect a deep involvement with material and technique and their relationship to space. His practice often explores the tensions between organic and industrial materials, as well as the interplay between function and sculptural form. Each element in his work retains its material specificity while contributing to a cohesive composition, inviting viewers to face unexpected forms and moments of absurdity. Kittinger’s new sculptures ‘Charlie’ (2026) and ‘Toni’ (2026) were commissioned for the ‘Lebt und arbeitet in Wien’ exhibition. Their organic forms, sculpted from brick, coupled with their titles and grouping within the space, give the works an anthropomorphic appearance.

Ludwig Kittinger (geb. 1977, Graz, Österreich) entwickelt Skulpturen, die eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit Material und Technik sowie deren Beziehung zum Raum widerspiegeln. Seine Praxis untersucht häufig die Spannungen zwischen organischen und industriellen Materialien sowie das Wechselspiel zwischen Funktion und skulpturaler Form. Jedes Element in seinen Arbeiten bewahrt seine materielle Eigenständigkeit und trägt zugleich zu einer kohärenten Komposition bei, die die Betrachter*innen mit unerwarteten Formen und Momenten der Absurdität konfrontiert. Kittingers neue Skulpturen „Charlie“ (2026) und „Toni“ (2026) wurde für die Ausstellung „Lebt und arbeitet in Wien“ beauftragt. Kittingers organische Formen, die aus einem geometrischen Material geformt sind, verleihen den Werken in Verbindung mit ihren Titeln und ihrer Gruppierung im Raum eine scheinbar anthropomorphe Erscheinung.

Artist Workshops in September
Back by popular demand!

Join the artist Laurence Sturla for a special workshop developing ceramic sculptures based on images, found objects and research materials. We will explore how forms can be distorted, reassembled and materially reimagined through our hands. Rather than creating a “correct” representation, the focus lies on using simple hand-building techniques to translate details from images into new and autonomous ceramic forms. Please bring a selection of images, materials or found objects which resonates with your idea of a landmark.

Join the artist Lazar Lyutakov for a special workshop exploring the possibilities of making lamps from plastic vessels. We will experiment with material, light, colour and composition to develop unique objects with a functional purpose. Please bring your own plastic bowls, cups and other vessels – old or new and preferably as many as possible!

Jojo Gronostay about his project DWMC

‘Dead White Men’s Clothes’ functions as both artwork and experiment. Jojo Gronostay’s (b. 1988, Hamburg, Germany) materials are deliberately hybrid. Altered second-hand garments, scanned and reprinted textiles and repurposed found items carry histories from their previous use and street markets. In ‘Untitled’ (2026), Gronostay uses recycled silkscreen prints from his fashion label to make new works for the ‘Lebt und arbeitet in Wien’ exhibition. Painting functions as upcycling to brand art as the upcycling industry par excellence. ‘Structure 01’ and ‘Structure 02’ (both 2026) repurpose clothing stands as sculpture, the recycled object being both material and method, tracing the actual movements of value and desire between continents.

Das Modelabel „Dead White Men’s Clothes“ (DWMC) von Jojo Gronostay (geb. 1988, Hamburg, Deutschland) fungiert als Kunstwerk und als Experiment. Der Künstler verwendet bewusst hybride Materialien: abgeänderte Second-Hand-Kleidung, gescannte und neu bedruckte Textilien, umgenutzte und wiederverwendete Gegenstände, die alle Geschichten ihrer vorherigen Verwendung und Straßenmärkten tragen. Für die neuen, im Rahmen der Ausstellung „Lebt und arbeitet in Wien“ hergestellten Arbeiten „Untitled“ (2026) verwendet Gronostay recycelte Siebdrucke von seinem Modelabel. Malerei funktioniert hier als Upcycling-Methode, um Kunst als die Upcycling-Industrie überhaupt zu kennzeichnen. Für „Structure 01“ und „Structure 02“ werden Kleiderständer zu Skulpturen umgewandelt, wobei das recycelte Objekt zugleich Material und Methode ist und die tatsächlichen Bewegungen von Wert und Begehren zwischen Kontinenten nachgezeichnet werden.

New Publication

On the occasion of Florentina Holzinger’s project SEAWORLD VENICE at the Austrian Pavilion at the 61st La Biennale di Venezia, Bierke Verlag, Gropius Bau and Kunsthalle Wien have published the first monographic book on her work. Edited by Nora-Swantje Almes it brings together perspectives on her artistic practice, visual and choreographic vocabulary, and central themes, and includes texts by Claire Bishop, Caroline Lillian Schopp, Mire Lee, Anna Leon and Nora-Swantje Almes, contributions by Beatrice Cordua, Bettina Kogler, Georg Döcker, Matthias Lilienthal, Sara Ostertag and Felix Ritter, as well as an interview with Florentina Holzinger.

PW LIVE: In Living Daylight

On the longest day of the year, we gathered to experience a day of performances curated by PW-Magazine as part of the exhibition ‘Lebt und arbeitet in Wien’. Unfolding as the light changed, from morning until evening, gestures, texts and sounds by Vienna-based artists of different generations took shape between Karlsplatz and the Museumsquartier.

From Paul Ebhart’s evolving sound compositions and the poetic encounter of Alix Eynaudi & Han-Gyeol Lie, to Frank Wasser’s reflections on identity, Maria Mercedes’ exploration of rehearsal, Bryony Dawson’s collective reading performance and Sainkho Namtchylak’s vocal landscapes – ‘PW LIVE: In Living Daylight’ transformed the summer solstice into a living choreography of encounters.

On 30 August you can visit the exhibition ‘Lebt und arbeitet in Wien’ at Kunsthalle Wien Museumsquartier and Karlsplatz free of charge, thanks to our partnership with Dorotheum ().

These Free Sundays underscore Kunsthalle Wien’s commitment to making contemporary art accessible to all, by eliminating the barriers to participation in its activities. By offering free access to its exhibitions on every last Sunday of the month Kunsthalle Wien aims to extend and promote Vienna’s cultural offer to new audiences.

‘Lebt und arbeitet in Wien‘ is an extensive survey presenting 130 artworks by 56 artists who live and work in Vienna. Join us for a free guided tour in German through the exhibition at 4pm. Please register for the tour via link in bio.
