Birke Gorm is representing Austria at the 16th Gwangju Biennale in 2026. Under the title THE EVENING AND THE MORNING AND THE NIGHT, she has transformed the upper floor of Gwangju’s Eunam Museum of Art, both physically and conceptually, into an attic—a storage place, full of latent energies, largely left undisturbed.

The Austrian Pavilion and the publication are commissioned by Phileas – The Austrian Office for Contemporary Art and co-financed by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Housing, Arts, Culture, Media, and Sport. The exhibition at P21 Project Space offers an opportunity to encounter Gorm’s work ahead of the Gwangju Biennale, where she will present THE EVENING AND THE MORNING AND THE NIGHT in the Austrian Pavilion at the 16th Gwangju Biennale.

We are also pleased to announce the launch of TALES FROM THE ATTIC, the publication accompanying the Austrian Pavilion, alongside a conversation between the artist and Pavilion curator Attilia Fattori Franchini.

Let’s start by talking about the exhibition ‚Machines Complex’ at Croy Nielsen (…) The space is divided into three rooms, and in your exhibition text, you suggested that it can be understood as the same exhibition performed three times over (…)?
BIO: I was thinking about reproduction—as a technical process, but also metaphorically. The works in this show are made using techniques such as print-making, analog photography, digital printing, and casting. What interested me most was the idea of approaching this through an analogy of biological reproduction, where there is an element of evolution—or possibly de-evolution—depending on which traits are carried forward. This became a way of thinking about repetition: how one idea can take on a new form in a different room…..
