Guest curated by Mel Huang, Radical Computing is a love letter to the personal computer, and to everyone who has ever tinkered, hacked, subverted and made with code. πŸ’Œ

From the raw energy of the demoscene to global creative coding and open-source software movements, Radical Computing brings together people, communities and computers that push the boundaries of what computation has been and can be.

Featuring new commissions from an incredible collection of artists, plus a revival of Laurie Spiegel’s groundbreaking work Music Mouse, this is not your usual computing show. Explore personal computers from the Buntine Computer Collection. Plus see a rare piece of computing history: a Connection Machine CM-2, restored by the NCM team in consultation with Lead Product Designer, Tamiko Thiel. πŸ”₯

This show explores a new type of network, built on artist protocols, not those of big tech. Rather than invisible and frictionless, like so much of the technology we use today, Stigmergy's structure is as visible as the artwork it displays (provided by over 100 artists from all over the globe).

Today, Mon 27 Jul, the Australian government will trial β€œAusAlert”, a new national alert system for use in extreme weather events and other emergencies. At 2pm, your phone will blare with a test alarm, advising you of a national test.

AusAlert has been developed in response to the 2019-2020 β€œBlack Summer” bushfires, where existing SMS alert systems sometimes failed to reach people in regional areas. Today's test is a trial before the full system rolls out in October 2026.

Some domestic violence advocates have expressed concerns about the risk this trial may pose to vulnerable people in our communities, exposing β€˜safe phones’ or otherwise hidden devices. Representatives from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have advised that these devices should be switched off for 24 hours to prevent the alert going off.

This is the latest in a long line of national alert systems. In NCM’s Conversations Gallery, we explore how people have communicated during crises, from air raid sirens that were used during World War II to transparent face masks that allowed for lip-reading during COVID-19 precautions.
