Justine Lambrechts (1998) creates paintings that explore the uncertain territory between observation and imagination. Drawing on a fascination with (un)natural found objects, a trope deeply rooted in the genre of sci-fi, her work often depicts objects that seem familiar yet resist easy identification. Through processes of collecting, photographing, digital manipulation, modelling, and painting, these forms are gradually detached from their original context and transformed into images that occupy an ambiguous space between the earthly and the cosmic, the mundane and the monumental.
Influenced by geological structures, astronomical imagery, scientific documentation, and speculative fiction, she is interested in how meaning shifts when scale, distance, and perspective become unstable. A close-up surface may resemble a celestial body; an everyday object may appear as an archaeological artefact or an extraterrestrial structure. Rather than presenting fictional worlds, her work investigates the mechanisms through which such worlds emerge in the viewer's imagination.
By moving between observation and construction, evidence and illusion, she invites a way of looking in which certainty gives way to speculation. Her works propose objects without fixed origins, suspended between what is recognised and what remains unknown.
