Met 150 werken van uitsluitend Belgische kunstenaars neemt de tentoonstelling de bezoeker mee door 130 jaar artistieke creatie, met Léon Spilliaert als centrale figuur. Van James Ensor en Constant Permeke tot Luc Tuymans en Michaël Borremans: ontdek een uitzonderlijke dialoog tussen Belgische moderne en hedendaagse kunst.

Spanning three decades of creation, the exhibition brings together 160 works inspired by the Jean-Michel Othoniel’s travels around the world, from monumental sculptures and installations to around a hundred rarely shown watercolours.

VERSAILLES | In 2010, Jean-Michel Othoniel was invited to reimagine the Water Theatre Grove at the Château de Versailles alongside landscape designer Louis Benech.

For this historic setting, Othoniel drew inspiration from the graceful movements of Baroque dance. He transformed the curves and rhythms of three dances, an entrée, a minuet and a bo***ée, into monumental sculptural fountains.

INDIA | From India, the artist brought back a bicycle covered in colourful glass bangles, as well as mirrored glass bricks that inspired a new body of work.

During the lockdowns of the 2020s, these bricks took on a deeper meaning. Moved by images of the suffering caused by the pandemic in India and of bodies laid on raw-clay bricks before cremation, Othoniel created Corps de l’Inde: mirrored glass floors conceived on the scale of anonymous bodies.

In tribute to those who died, these luminous works transform makeshift funeral altars into reflections of a shared experience of loss.
