This week is for the next generation. 🤸‍♀️

🔹 From Monday: Our Teen Holiday Academy invites young people aged 11–15 to create their own animated short film. Together with Clavis School for Art and Science, participants will use analog photography, drawing, animation, and voice to develop a film based on their own ideas and experiences. Through a collaborative process, they’ll explore themes like identity, visibility, and self-worth while taking a conscious step back from social media. Discover more events inspired by Lauren Greenfield's exhibition.

🔹 Sunday: “und jetzt?” is a free day of orientation and inspiration for young people. Through honest conversations with people from different fields, the event explores how to find your own path, navigate uncertainty, and figure out what success means to you. Get your free ticket via the event link in bio.

🔹 Free entry for everyone aged 18 and under: Growing up with social media can raise a lot of questions about how you see yourself and others. In Lauren Greenfield’s “Social Studies”, a group of teenagers share their experiences of life online and how it shapes their ideas of beauty, comparison, identity, and belonging. Visit the exhibition with your friends or family and reflect on the role social media plays in your own life. Plan your visit via the ticket link in bio.

🔹 Café Bar: Stop by for a coffee before exploring the exhibitions, grab some lunch, or stay for a drink after work. We’re open from 8:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and 9:00 to 20:00 on weekends.

These Kodachrome slides give us a glimpse into everyday life between the 1940s and the early 1980s. Think days outdoors, family trips, and time spent with friends and loved ones.

"No Place Like Home" is Lee Shulman’s invitation to discover a collective family album, vibrantly assembled from thousands of anonymous snapshots he has been collecting through The Anonymous Project for nearly a decade.

On view until 1 November. 📸

With “roger ballen.! drawing meets photography”, we turn our lens on one of contemporary photography’s most influential figures. Since the late 1990s, drawing has played an increasingly transformative role in Roger Ballen’s photographic language.

On view from 7 November, over 120 works spanning 1998 to 2025 offer a glimpse into Ballen’s unique visual world, where interior spaces, animals, fragments of the human body, doll parts, drawings and objects serve as cast members. With connections to Art Brut and a deep interest in the subconscious, this distinctive aesthetic has become known as the “Ballenesque.”

The exhibition extends beyond the photographic frame: a screening room, found objects and sculptural interventions structure the exhibition, while a site-specific installation connects the gallery space with the loft.

Join us for the opening on 6 November at 19:00, featuring a lecture by Roger Ballen. More details coming soon.

This exhibition was created in collaboration with museum gugging and curated by Nina Ansperger, Artistic and Scientific Lead, museum gugging. It was co-curated by Marie-Luise Mayer, Exhibitions Manager at Fotografiska Berlin, in collaboration with the artist.

In 2020, the Ari Statue of Peace was installed in Berlin Moabit to commemorate the so-called “comfort women” across the Asia-Pacific region, who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War II. Its arrival prompted protests from the Japanese government and a wider debate over how their stories should be remembered.

For Berlin-based artist Miji Ih, the Statue of Peace became the starting point for her engagement with the so-called “comfort women.” Her exhibition "Mouths: On Water and Wh**ky" connects their history with the lived realities of women around U.S. military bases in Japan, South Korea, and Germany.

“I wanted to create a space of remembrance for social stigma and exclusion, for the silence that formed around them, and for the ongoing will of women to live against all resistance. By addressing the recurring realities in women’s lives across different times and places, I seek to discover the ordinary moments within what was left behind.” – Miji Ih

On view until 13 January as part of the Emerging Berlin talent program.

The exhibition was curated by Marie-Luise Mayer (Exhibitions Manager at Fotografiska Berlin), in collaboration with the artist, and produced in partnership with IFA Berlin and Volkswagen R, with the kind cooperation of our photography print partner WhiteWall.

Thomas Billhardt could spend hours watching life around Alexanderplatz. It became one of his most constant subjects, and he returned to photograph the people moving through it and the fleeting moments that caught his eye. He saw things that were easy to overlook, like a traffic officer caught in a movement that looked almost like a dance.

He kept looking for these moments wherever he went. Even under rigid political systems and in times of conflict, he looked beyond the structures shaping people’s lives and focused on how people lived and found moments of joy.

“Die Augen weit offen” showcases some of Thomas Billhardt’s key series from several decades, with a focus on the years from 1959 to 1972, illustrating the range and international scale of his work.

On view until 7 February 2027.
