Helmut Newton Foundation Berlin

Helmut Newton Foundation Berlin Established in 2003 by Helmut and June Newton, dedicated to keep their legacy alive.
(788)

The Helmut Newton Foundation was established by Helmut Newton himself at the end of 2003. It is a foundation registered according to Swiss law in Zurich, Switzerland. The Helmut Newton Foundation is an international foundation dedicated to the promotion, preservation and presentation of the photographic works of Helmut and June Newton, who under the name of Alice Springs has also produced a signif

icant body of portraiture photography since 1970. At its inception, Helmut Newton endowed the Foundation with numerous original photographs that comprise a significant proportion of his artistic work. In October 2003, the Helmut Newton Foundation entered into a formal agreement with the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz) that allows the Helmut Newton Foundation unlimited use of the ground and first floors of the former military casino in Berlin-Charlottenburg (Landwehrkasino) for exhibition purposes. According to the wishes of Helmut Newton, the Foundation should not be a “dead museum,” but rather a “living institution.” Various aspects of Newton’s multifaceted, innovative and provocative works will be presented over a series of exhibitions. The works of other artists and photographers will also be presented in dialogue with Newton’s work.

Happy Birthday to the incredible Karen Mulder!

The Dutch model started her career at a very young age and by her second year on the runway, she was already modeling for designers such as Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent and Versace. As one of the original Victoria Secret Angels and the face of numerous campaigns, Mulder was among the best-paid models in the world for many years.

But in an industry obsessed with appearance, Karen bravely called out the abuse many models faced in the industry. Instead of being supported, she was ridiculed and pushed to the side. Since the 2000s, she stepped back from the public eye. We are glad to see her back on Instagram, where she is sharing throwback photos of her memorable career. This cool portrait of Mulder was shot for American Vogue and is currently on view at Villa Olmo in Como, Italy as part of the exhibition "Helmut Newton. Cars," in collaboration with and . We wish you all the best, !

Happy Birthday to the fantastic Annette Bening!

Bening was born and raised in Kansas until elementary school, before her family moved to San Francisco, where she graduated from San Francisco State University and the American Conservatory Theater. She began her career on stage with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival company in 1980; seven years later, she made her Broadway debut in the Tina Howe play "Coastal Disturbances". This performance earned Bening her first Tony Award nomination.

Bening achieved her Hollywood breakthrough with her performance as con artist Myra Langtry in the neo-noir crime thriller "The Grifters" (1990), for which she received her first of five Academy Award nominations. She continued her success with films such as "American Beauty" (2000), "Being Julia" (2005), "Mrs. Harris" (2007), "The Kids Are All Right" (2011), "Nyad" (2024) and many more. Bening also returned to the stage numerous times, for plays such as "Hedda Gabler" (1999) and the revival of Arthur Miller’s "All My Sons" (2019), always delivering acclaimed performances.

Her career spans over four decades, and today, on her birthday, we want to celebrate Bening’s versatile work across screen and stage. We wish you nothing but the best!

Happy birthday to the amazing Kristin Scott Thomas!

Scott Thomas was born in Cornwall, England, in 1960 and has built a successful career across both British and French cinema. After studying drama in London and Paris, she started acting in the 1980s and gained wider recognition for her role in “A Handful of Dust” (1988) before becoming internationally known through films such as “Four Weddings and a Funeral” (1994), “The English Patient” (1996), and “Gosford Park” (2001).

In her private life, she has spent much of her adult life in France, raising her children in Paris, and even got awarded the Légion d’Honneur. Recently, she expanded into directing and writing with “My Mother’s Wedding” (2023), a project partly inspired by her own childhood and family history. Today, we are celebrating her life and legacy with this Helmut Newton portrait, taken in 1995. We wish you all the best, !

Happy birthday to the one and only Naomi Campbell!

One of the defining figures in fashion history, Campbell was born in London in 1970. She began her career as a teenager and had her breakthrough in 1986 when she was scouted while window-shopping in Covent Garden. From that moment on, she became one of the most recognizable faces of the late 1980s and ‘90s, defining the era of the supermodel.

In 1988, Campbell was the first black model to appear on the cover of French Vogue, after Yves Saint Laurent reportedly threatened to withdraw advertising from the magazine if they refused to feature her. Throughout her career, Campbell has consistently broken racial barriers in an industry that often excluded and still excludes models of color from major campaigns and covers. More than four decades after her big breakthrough, Campbell still remains a major presence on runways and in pop culture.

Our "first from the archives" for this month takes you to Miami, where Helmut Newton shot this summery feature for Vogue back in May 1993. We see three models posing and playing outside,

lounging inside - all dressed in white, elegant knit-wear that makes you feel like chosing your favorite, pack-up your own suitcase and fly off.

Leave a comment where you would travel to!
