In celebration of Walter Schels’s ninetieth birthday, C/O Berlin and the F.C. Gundlach Foundation present the photographer’s first retrospective "16° Fische" in Berlin. With more than three hundred works spanning nearly seven decades, the exhibition offers new insights into Schels’s oeuvre and highlights an often overlooked aspect of his practice: his experimental and transformatory works.

became known for his striking black-and-white portraits of newborns and centenarians, famous and unknown faces, animals, and plants. His works revolve around fundamental questions of human existence, while the exhibition reveals how change, repetition, and materiality have shaped his photographic practice from the very beginning.

How do images bait or beguile us as they circulate online? How do they compel, capture, or control us?

"The Lure of the Image" brings together fourteen artistic positions exploring the seductive power of contemporary digital image cultures. Between social media feeds, dating app profiles, memes, emojis, and computer-generated imagery, the exhibition unfolds a multifaceted panorama of visual practices that shape our social, cultural, and political realities.

The featured works trace the mechanisms of the lure in digital space—showing how images direct attention, provoke emotions, and influence opinions. Oscillating between overwhelm and reflection, the exhibition reveals how images shape perception while opening up spaces for critique and counterimages.

With works by Zoé Aubry , Sara Bezovšek , Viktoria Binschtok .binschtok, Sara Cwynar , Éamonn Freel x Lynski , Dina Kelberman , Michael Mandiberg , Joiri Minaya , Simone C Niquille, Jon Rafman , Jenny Rova , Hito Steyerl , Noura Tafeche , and Ellie Wyatt .

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of VALIE EXPORT.

A pioneering artist and one of the most influential voices in feminist and media art, her work challenged conventions and reshaped the way we think about the body, image, and representation.

In 2024, we had the honor of presenting her work at C/O Berlin. We remember her as a radical thinker and artist whose legacy will continue to resonate.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all those she inspired.
