Smithills Hall Museum One of Bolton's original family homes, Smithills Hall is a Grade 1 listed building, full of history and drama. Free entry Entrance to the Hall is free.

Make a date with history and visit Smithills Hall Museum. Smithills Hall opened to the public as a museum in 1963 but its history dates back to the 14th century. Today much of the Hall has been restored to its original splendour and you can see rooms and displays from across the centuries. Join acclaimed author Sally O’Reilly in the atmospheric medieval hall at Smithills for an afternoon steeped in myth, mystery and the untold origins of Macbeth.

She’ll be discussing her latest novel Hagtale: A Macbeth Original Story — a dark, lyrical reimagining of the tales whispered around winter fires, where wolf‑children, witches and kings collide.

📚 Books will be available to buy and have signed on the day.

First, behold the tragic passion of Romeo & Juliet 🌹—two lovers bound by fate and folly. Then, as twilight deepens 🌙, witness Hamlet—a tale of vengeance, madness, and mortal doom ⚔️💀.

Bring forth thy picnic basket 🍇 or partake in delectable treats from Bake & Roast. Recline upon blanket or chair 🪑 and savour these tales beneath the open heavens ☀️ (weather most kind, we hope!).

There’ll be garden games, story times, fairground rides and more to be announced soon! Free entry. Charges are applicable for some activities.

🌱To help keep our historic property peaceful (and parking stress-free!) we’re encouraging guests to travel green when coming to the party.
Whether it’s walking through our lovely footpaths or hopping on the bus, you’ll be helping out!

We're looking for brilliant businesses to take part in our popular annual Smithills Hall Garden Party! 📣

The event is on Sunday 5 July, and runs from 12pm-4pm so stallholders will need to arrive to set up from 11am.
