When a beloved low-church vicar died in 1865, St Mary's in Calne plunged into a fierce religious and social schism. The bishop appointed a high-church successor, Revd John Duncan, whose emphasis on ritual sparked deep tensions.

At the same time, a local class war brewed between "old money" (the landed aristocracy like the Marquis of Lansdowne) and "new money" (the Harris family of factory-owning pork butchers). Fed up with the shifting church traditions, the industrial Harris family led the break away and the formation of Calne Free Church.

A big thank you to the Calne Area Board - https://www.facebook.com/Wiltsareaboard and the David Harris Trust for their funding contributions.

The new boiler replaces one that had been in service since we opened in 2004. Its replacement ensures the well-being of our volunteers and visitors, alongside helping to keep the temperature stable for the preservation of our archives for generations to come.

Thank you to the volunteers for a fantastic team effort during the process; it couldn't have been done without you.

Today the 'mayor bear' is celebrating this year's anniversary of the Calne flag!

Accepted into the UK Flag Registry in September 2009, the Calne Town flag was chosen by public competition and designed by local resident, Kevin Hatchman.

The blue represents the River Marden that flows through our town, the green the stunning surrounding countryside.

The gold ring honours Joseph Priestley’s discovery of oxygen at Bowood, while he lived here in Calne.

While the white stripe represents our chalk landscape and Cherhill White Horse.

The Calne flag remains an emblem of our history, our pride, and our future.

Pop in today to find out more about Calne's history and choose a name for £2 and the winning name will take Mayor Bear home at the end of the current mayoral year. All proceeds support the Calne Heritage Centre and the Calne Men's Shed (it's not just for men).
