The REME Museum is an award-winning museum sharing the story of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers through eight large galleries exhibiting historic equipment, artefacts and archival material.

Details often bring items in our collection to life.

This plaque is a perfect example:
It was handmade between 1956 and 1958 by individuals from 2nd and 6th Gurkhas in Hong Kong. Our records reveal that the shield itself was carved using a kukri. Those involved in the creation of the plaque didn't have access to brushes at the time, and so made some from their own hair. The detail of the badge is very intricate and the plaque only measures 200mm tall.

30 years ago on this day, 50 Hong Kong Workshop REME held a Formal Parade to mark its closure.

In the unit’s final Craftsman Magazine article, published December 1996, it was termed “the end of an era”. The following information is taken from that article:

50 Hong Kong Workshop (then 50 Command Workshop) was formed in 1946 at Sham Shui Po, where it remained until 1984. In February 1985, it moved to the purpose-built site at Malaya Lines, Sek Kong, New Territories.

The unit forged close links with the local community, rewarded by the presentation of the Wilkinson Sword of Peace in 1974.

In his speech on the day of the parade, Major General B H Dutton CBE praised their excellence and professionalism, stating “These have always been the watchwords of 50 Hong Kong Workshop.”

The workshop became non-operational on 1 October 1996 after 50 years of service.

It's International Dog Day! 🐕
We’ve been thinking out of the box (literally) - here are some models in our collection depicting vehicles named after dog breeds:

Bloodhound Supersonic Car - the model of the car that was built in collaboration with REME Tradesmen to attempt to break the land speed record (pictured on display in our Education Suite).

Staghound Armoured Car, depicting a crew member in the turret and a spade on the side.

Foxhound Armoured Car - this model was presented to Colonel Martin Court at the end of his tour as Equipment Capability Commander on Operation Herrick, 2013.

Explore the different styles of uniform worn by REME soldiers from WW2 to today in our most recently updated exhibit.

The new uniform display can be found in our Around the World Gallery and viewed from either side by the International M5 Half-Track and FV106 Samson Armoured Recovery Vehicle.

Last weekend, several of our team and vehicles from our Reserve Collection attended the Fairford Steam Rally!

Our staff and volunteers had a great time meeting visitors and talking about what REME and the museum do.

Did you know? Ken Miles, best known for developing and racing the Ford GT40, served as an Armament Artificer with REME in WW2.

Initially serving as a driving instructor with an Anti-Aircraft unit in the Territorial Army, he was among the founder members of REME on 1 October 1942.

Despite his impressive racing career, Miles famously missed out on the Le Mans win in 1966. He tragically died two months later, on this day 60 years ago, while testing the experimental Ford J-car in Southern California.
