Stephen Young (1946 - 2025)
ARCADIA, INTERRUPTED
6 June - 5 July
This exhibition celebrates the remarkable career of Stephen Young, one of Wales’s most distinctive painters.
Stephen studied at Guildford and Chelsea Schools of Art, graduating with first-class honours in painting before postgraduate study and a residency at Sussex University. He later settled in Cardiff, where he taught at Cardiff College of Art and became Director of the BA Fine Art course at UWIC. His practice moved from abstraction towards a distinctive narrative language, bringing figures and landscape into layered, theatrical compositions. He exhibited widely in the UK, including at John Moores, the Hayward Gallery and the Serpentine, and his work is held in collections worldwide, including the Arts Council of Wales.
There are 35 works on display, a mixture of oils and mixed media works dating between 1989 and 2017. There are two wonderfully written essays by Mike Crowther and Paul Greenhalgh, both of whom he worked with in Cardiff, on the exhibition page on our website.
