We are highlighting the paintings of Peter Clossick in our current exhibition, ‘Tête à Tête’, alongside works on paper by Chagall, Dali, Le Corbusier, Matisse and Picasso, which ends this Saturday.

Peter Clossick is a very well established portrait painter. He shared the model, Joan Yardley Mills, with Frank Auerbach. She is the subject of this particular paintings.

Here is a little bit that Auerbach said about Peter Clossick’s work some years ago - “I hope something good comes of your exhibition; this is probably not of any help or relevance but the images in the catalogue work for me… It seems a bit fatuous, but I do feel that you are getting better all the time, which is not true of most of us… For what it is worth, I think the paintings in your new catalogue look (to me) your best…Of course, you are special. I have been impressed by your work….” 

Peter’s paintings will be on show here until the end of Saturday.

This rare linocut by Pablo Picasso from 1962 depicts the artist’s wife and muse, Jacqueline Roque.

This work is available le in our current exhibition. Here is what the author, Miguel Orozco, writes about it in his ‘Catalogue Raisonnée of Picasso Linocuts’:

“In his late work, the n**e, together with the motif of the artist and his model, becomes a particular focus. Jacqueline Roque is 45 years younger than Picasso and has a similar short, stocky stature and large, radiantly dark eyes as the artist. While her striking profile appears again and again, especially in his lithographs and etchings in the second half of the 1950s, it is her body that Picasso depicts in his many depictions of the female n**e and eroticism in the 1960s and early 1970s.

With her tiny head above a monumental body, seated on a block-like structure, the n**e in this painting has a raw physicality. This is accentuated through the medium of the linocut - the rough linear prominence of her body suggests a primitivism often associated with the woodcut. Her heavy hips and long hair recall the figure in a slightly earlier linocut - Grand nu dansant - which shows a lady with a large backside in a dancing pose. Common to both images is the double point of view that allows the buttocks to be seen simultaneously with the breasts - a Cubist tactic that the artist also employed at this time in portraits of Jacqueline’s face, as in “Portrait de Jacqueline de face. I” and “Portrait de Jacqueline de face. II” (Bloch 1063) and “Jacqueline au bandeau de face” (Bloch 1069). This doubling of focus on the female n**e would become a significant feature in his paintings and prints of the following ten years.”

This is a very impressive linocut by Picasso from 1965. An edition of 160, one example is in the permanent collection of The British Museum.

Part of our exhibition Tête à Tête. The show is full of rare and collectible works on paper by five key School of Paris Artists, alongside paintings by Peter Clossick and bronze sculpture by Julian Cox.

The Vollard Suite, the most significant cycle of prints made by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), was commissioned by Ambroise Vollard, a leading art dealer in Paris. Begun in 1930 and completed in 1937, this series of one hundred etchings explores the artist’s studio as a creative space and provides an intimate look into the mind of Picasso. It is rare for these editions to be signed by the artist.

We are delighted to feature this stunning bronze sculpture by Julian Cox in our current exhibition. His bronze sculptures throughout October.

This particular piece is very substantial, at nearly 80cm in height and entirely polished. It has a real timeless presence.

This beautiful etching is the earliest work that we have by Marc Chagall in our current exhibition, TÊTE À TÊTE. It is an original etching with drypoint from 1924. This is from an edition of just 100, signed by Chagall and in immaculate condition.

The exhibition runs until the end of this month.
