Did you know that 'Dad' jokes have an ancient history? We've found the perfect one for our friends over at Sick to Death Chester!

It's an absolute classic from the 3rd or 4th century joke book Philogelos (The Laughter Lover):

A doctor was talking to a patient. "Doctor," the patient says, "Whenever I get up after a sleep, I feel dizzy for half an hour, then I'm all right." "Then wait for half an hour before getting up," said the doctor.

‘I went to Rome and all I got you was this stylus!’

Did you know that ancient Romans had souvenirs? The Romans had a long history of travelling to different places throughout the Empire and beyond. While visiting these places they were well known to leave their mark (Roman graffiti deserves its own post) or buying something to bring back home with them, as a gift, keepsake, or memento.

Coins and medallions, miniature busts and statues, commemorative terracotta oil lamps, gems and jewellery; many things were made specifically to be souvenirs, while other items may have been locally made goods that were acquired and brought back as a reminder of their trip.

One of our favourites comes from Britain! Found in London and dating to around 70AD, it's an iron stylus used for writing on wax tablets. Except unlike the other 200 styluses found on the same site, this one has been inscribed, in Latin:

‘I have come from the City. I bring you a welcome gift
with a sharp point that you may remember me.
I ask, if fortune allowed, that I might be able (to give)
as generously as the way is long (and) as my purse is empty.’

Essentially, I came from the City (very likely Rome), either as a visitor or after travelling there, and I wanted to get you something to remind you of me, but I didn't have a lot of money.

We feel at this point we ought to remind you, that if you are visiting us here at Deva, we do have a gift shop.😉

We'd love to hear about your favourite souvenir, either that you bought yourself or that was gifted to you. Can you top the Roman equivalent of a ballpoint pen?
