Derby Museums is an independent trust and organisation run for, and on behalf of, the people of Derby. We provide a museums and arts service, accessible to everyone, and are responsible for the curation of all the artefacts and works of art entrusted to us, and the buildings in which these are held. Our aim as a new organisation is to bring as many of these objects into the public domain as is practically possible and exhibit them in ways that delight and inspire.

Discover how people, sheep and land are interwoven in a fascinating talk with artist and researcher Laura Harrington...

Laura makes work that considers the complex relations between humans and landscapes, often through fieldwork, cross-disciplinary research and collaborative working.

In her enlightening talk, you will explore Laura’s work for Creatively Connected –Wearing the Uplands – where Wool acts as a tool for shared and unfolding conversations around farming, ecology and change in upland landscapes.

Explore Laura’s journey into creating a knitted Sphagnum Bog Jumper—not as a fixed outcome, but as the journey of an upland fleece becoming a garment through a co-creative process.

🐑The jumper is an anchor for conversation and imagination, reflecting how people, sheep, land, and ecological rhythms are interwoven.

Wearing the Uplands: The journey of Bog Jumper – Artist Talk:
📅14 June
🕛1:30 to 3.30pm, tickets £10

🌸 Our Learning Programme team visited the beautiful well dressings at St Alkmund’s Well, celebrating Derby’s artist, Joseph Wright.

If you’re visiting the Museum of Making, we recommend taking the short walk to see them.

One depicts 27/28 Queen Street, home of Joseph Wright, alongside the famous Orrery, while another reimagines the bird from An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump flying away in hope of light.

With a theme of seeking the light through the darkness, the well dressings feel a wonderful reflection of Wright’s work and legacy.

A huge thank you to everyone involved for such creativity in marking our Year of Wright celebrations.

Over the past year we have really enjoyed sharing your enthusiasm for learning textile skills to make, repair, adapt and change your clothing!

We want to carry on the journey with you, so alongside the Field to Fashion exhibition, we are launching talks and workshops that invite you to be curious, creative, imaginative and hopeful...

Our series of workshops and talks are inspired by Amy Twigger Holroyd’s Fashion Fictions, they will give you the opportunity to imagine an alternative version of the present-day fashion systems and inspire sustainable actions and practices.

Through our workshops, you can learn the skills and passion for change with your clothes, in the real world.
