Today we wanted to highlight the work of one of the artists in our current exhibition User Interface: Coded Craft, jeweller Silvia Weidenbach. Known for experimenting with new technologies, she combines traditional metalworking techniques with emerging digital technologies to create highly ornate, biomorphic jewellery that draws on historical ornament, museum collections, and digital culture. Moving between jewellery, sculpture, and speculative object, her work explores how technology can expand creative possibilities while remaining grounded in material knowledge and making.

In this exhibition Silvia presents a selection of her jewellery alongside a digital collage that maps the visual and conceptual ecosystem of her practice. Fragments of research, historical references, digital models, and virtual imagery come together to reveal making as an expanded, layered process across physical and digital space.

Featured in our current exhibition is work by Liu Qiwei, a jeweller, silversmith and researcher based in Edinburgh. Coded Craft includes several pieces from Liu Qiwei’s Lithos Offering (2023–24) series. The pieces (all brooches) have been created using an experimental process Liu Qiwei has developed that combines animal bone ash (from food waste) and enamel powder. The result is a unique textured surface and material structure that resembles rough stone. Creating these pieces requires the precise control of temperature and firing times. Using animal bones helps reduce food waste and prevent soil pollution.

As we head into autumn we're travelling to Dumfries and Galloway, where we'll be visiting the Crannog Campus in Castle Douglas on Tuesday 13th October, and Old School Thornhill on Wednesday 14th October, in partnership with The Stove Network and What We Do Now. Today we wanted to highlight the work of Aymeric Renoud, one of the artists whose work features in our current exhibition User Interface: Coded Craft.

Aymeric Renoud is a furniture designer and maker based in Dundee. Aymeric founded draff Studio in 2017 developing a new material using waste from breweries and distilleries. “Draff” is the damp remains of malt produced after brewing b**r or distilling wh**ky. Scotland produces around 48,700 tonnes of draff each year. While some is used as animal feed, this is not always possible, especially for urban breweries. Aymeric has developed a process that turns draff into a strong sheet material similar to OSB board. The grain and plant materials are dried quickly and then compressed using heat and pressure. This creates a dense, durable material suitable for furniture, wall panels and work surfaces. The appearance of the material changes depending on the ingredients used, with the heating process also influencing the colour. In the exhibition, visitors can see a stool and tray made from draff. Looking closely, you can still spot traces of barley and gin botanicals from the material’s previous life.

RSA200: Celebrating Together

Presenting work in the Travelling Gallery back in 1984 & 1987 in the exhibitions Different Kind of Good Weather and Paper Journeys (both curated by Diana Sykes), was artist Jacqui Parry RSA.

For much of her career Jacqui has developed her artistic ideas in paper using it as an independent medium, and in combination with other materials.

Parry has exhibited and lectured throughout the UK and internationally and her work is represented in private and public collections in Scotland and elsewhere in Europe, Japan, Australia and the USA.

This year the Royal Scottish Academy celebrates its 200th anniversary with RSA200: Celebrating Together. As part of the celebrations we are doing a monthly deep dive into our exhibition archive and look back at a number of the RSA’s Academicians and Alumni who have exhibited with the Travelling Gallery.
