Whilst we are on a break this week we wanted to highlight the work of artist Gregor Wright who has a number of works featured in our current exhibition 'real-time friction'.

Predominantly a painter, Gregor has also created a body of work that looks at current modes of image consumption as mediated by algorithms and advancing technology. Presented together in the exhibition are a selection of Gregor’s recent drawings and Automatic Self, (2022) one of his digital ‘screen-based paintings’.

Automatic Self was made using found imagery (from pulp science fiction covers and illustrations from fantasy magazines), which is then deconstructed, manipulated beyond recognition, and reformulated through algorithmic processes.

With the rise of AI-generated artwork Gregor highlights the tensions that lie between traditional painting and the virtual digital representations that increasingly dominate our lives.

RSA200: Celebrating Together

In line with the opening of the Venice Biennale this month we’ve chosen to look back at 'I Heart Scotland' by Rachel Maclean RSA (elect), an exhibition we toured back in 2014 commissioned by and in partnership with Edinburgh Printmakers. Responding to the referendum on Scottish independence at that time, the show explored a sense of both power and absurdity within representations of Scottish and British national pride.

Travelling Gallery made a visit to Rachel’s High School as well as introducing her work to audiences across the country. Rachel went on to represent Scotland at the Venice Biennale in 2017 and rapidly established herself as a distinctive creative voice creating baroque, hyper-real worlds using green-screen video technology and computer animation.

This year the Royal Scottish Academy celebrates its 200th anniversary with RSA200: Celebrating Together. As part of the celebrations we are doing a monthly deep dive into our exhibition archive and look back at a number of the RSA’s Academicians and Alumni who have exhibited with the Travelling Gallery.

Today we wanted to highlight the work of Hardeep Pandhal, one of the artists in our current exhibition 'real-time friction'.

Hardeep’s practice spans drawing, animation, film & installation, all often interwoven by a narrative that explores the complexities of contemporary culture, class, racial violence and power.

'real-time friction' features the work 'Riddles on Back Street', MIDIevil x Vandalorum Featuring Mister Ugly (2021). Using the visual aesthetics of an early-2000’s driving simulator video game and narrated as a music-video the work comments on cultural production, capitalism and racial stereotypes as perpetuated through everyday popular culture and categorization.

It’s been a pleasure to have Hardeep’s work included in the exhibition. The tour continues until 19 June 2026.
